External DVD recorders

I own a Dimension 4550 with DVD player and CD player/Recorder.  I want to purchase an external device that I can put camcorder video on to a DVD.  Which one would you recommend and is it easy to do?  Any recommendations would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I purchased the Roxio easy cd & dvd program for about $40. Make sure you buy one like that, that can record DVDs for use in a home player -not just another computer. You will probably have to upgrade your video card too.

You need to have "video memory" to encode your dvds... Make sure that you can do this by checking your stats, go to: control panel, then to the display icon, then to the settings tab, then to the adapter tab. Make sure you have at least 256 megabytes as your "memory size". Then you will be able to encode your dvds. The program wont run properly without it.

Also you will probably need to buy a device to transfer from your camcorder to your computer if there is no USB for it. http://roxio.com has the device you will probably need, it is included in a kit with the software you need, all for around $100. I think it is media creator 10, and it comes with that device.

So as long as you have video memory minimum 256 megabytes, and the correct software, and a dvd burning drive, you should be fine.

Also be aware that some programs dont work with dual layer dvd burners... beware, sometimes less is more. Also, you will need a dvd player to match the dvd you burn. for example memorex tends to play dvd-r... NOT dvd+r. Some will play dvd+rw, some anything... DVD combo burner drives will handle any kind of media (DVD+/-rw, & CD disks) unless otherwise specified... Just like the dual layer issue. Also be aware that lightscribe is just a labeling procedure added to the burner... And the special dvds are expensive to purchase for the machines!

You can ask these questions as you go, the forum is great... As for what burner to buy, everyone here seems to go to http://www.newegg.com/  There you should find some great deals!

P.S. The forum can help you install a video card if you need one, they helped me totally upgrade my machine!

Thanks so much for all the info.  I checked my adapter and it is a 32MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra.  Does this mean I need a new video card?  By the way, the video camera does have a USB connection.  Thanks again.
