DVD/CD Drive will not read disks.

I recently updated my Studio XPS 8000 to Windows 10, and now my built in dvd drive will not read any discs. It's definitely a software issue. My disc drive is: HL-DT-ST GH50N.  I verified that the driver is correctly installed and functioning correctly (via device manager), and the drive shows up in "my pc." If i load a disc I can see and hear it spin up, but it never loads into file explorer, and if I double click the drive, it just says "please insert a disc." The hardware was working fine before updating to Windows 10.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the dvd driver, all the fixes listed as well as looking for and deleting "upper filters" and "lower filters" for registry entry. Anything else I can try? Hardware troubleshooter and device manager shows that the driver is working properly (no errors exclamation points) and the drive appears in file explorer, but it won't read any discs despite spinning up as normal and clearly trying to read the disc.

Unfortunately since this system was not approved/tested by Dell for Win 10 there might be  limited options to try. It sounds like you have tried everything outlined here so the only other thing I could think of would be trying to see if removing the sata/chipset drivers and then restarting the system might get the drive working. Please note this last part is just a suggestion, and not something I have tried or know what the outcome will be.

One quick question, when you did the Win 10 Upgrade did you ever try a clean install afterwards? If not, that might be worth a shot. I know when I upgraded one of my personal systems doing a fresh install seemed to help a lot vs trying to troubleshoot, especially on my older systems.

Someone else here might have some answers.

Best regards,

Brad
