Hi Norpis,, Drives do tend to address the media differently, normally the speed is different per the format, however may I ask what is the name / model of this drive?
ADDED: As far as the speed itself, please verify that you have DMA enabled for the drive; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, articles 14 & 17.

Some drives will burn DVD+R media faster than the -R.
It is best to use the media your drive seem to like the best.
Also the +R media work best in the newer DVD players.
