Changing CD/DVD completely locks computer

I have an XPS Gen5, about 2 months old. Perhaps 20% of the time the cd/dvd drive is changed, the whole computer locks indefinitely. Hold the power button, reboot, repeat process over and over. Not only is it a nuisance, it leads to insanity when installing multi-cd programs. Had a buddy with two previous dells, (non-xps), who experienced the same problem, but was disatisfied with sitting on the phone for 2+ hours waiting, and just dealt with the problem. Unfortunately, I'm not nearly as patient. If anyone could point me in the direction of possible answers, feel free to post :)

Hi Chris,

Sorry my friend, not sure what you mean bye "20% of the time the CD/DVD is changed"

Lets cover a few standard steps anyway; click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2.
Also Section 12, article 10 to just clear up the filters, Windows will re-build all of these after each boot.

Open the case & exam the IDE cable, if it looks OK, go ahead and re-seat the connections on the motherboard and the back of the drive.
Finaly hover your mouse over the Product Support Tab above, click on Downloads, enter information for your system and scroll to Removable Media Storage Devices and see if Dell has a firmware update for your drive.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
