cd rom broken--how to fix?

My cd rom no longer reads or writes anything. It began a few months ago, the writer started writing slower and slower, and the player began getting more and more confused and slow, until it completely stopped working all together. I had the school computer technician look at it for me and he said there was nothing that he could do and that I would probably need to get a completely new cd drive all together. how do I go about this in person? can I go BestBuy or someplace? or do I strictly need to make an appointment to have a dell person come to my house and fix it(becuase I DO NOT want to send it out) (I need my computer too desperately)?

Thank you so much for your help! ;)

Are you using a desktop or portable? what does your warranty cover? If you can't even boot to the windows xp CD then it means the cdrom drive may be a goner. usually cd drives are easily replaceable in portables. just request for replacement. :smileywink:

I have a portable inspiron 600m. should I just make an appointment for a dell person to come to my house and fix it? I really don't want to mess up my computer by doing it myself.

If it is simply a defective optical drive that is covered by warranty and Dell Support confirms your diagnosis by having you perform a few tests when you call them, they will send a replacement drive but they may not send a technician. It is a simple matter to power down the notebook, remove the defective drive, and install the replacement. Not much harder than opening the drawer and installing a CD.

Instructions with illustrations are available in the User Guides area, available through the Product Support tab at the top-left of this page. See the third section, regarding Modules ( including optical drives like CD-ROM, CD-RW, CDRW/DVD, DVD-ROM, ect.) at the link below.
