Adding second HDD to Dimension 5000 - Disk Management does not detect new drive :-(

Hi

I have installed a second hard drive to my dimension 5000, as per dell's instructions. Pretty simple I would have thought. The drive is installed in the lower bay, with correct cables etc.

When I boot up, the initial DELL screen sits there for a while, then the following message is displayed

"Drive 0 not found, SATA-0"

If I press F1 to continue, the system fires up into windows no problem.

If I press F2 for setup, the settings are as follows:

SATA-0   On
Drive-ID  Unknown

SATA-2   On
Drive-ID  ST3160023AS (original dell drive)
BIOS  Controlled by BIOS

In windows, the disk management option does not recognise the new drive (unformatted and unpartitioned)
It only shows the existing HDD and the DVD drive.

Can anyone recommend the next step for me in resolving this issue?

I am thinking maybe a cable fault, I haven't tried swapping cables etc yet..

Many Thanks

Chris

1) You moved the cables.  The original Drive is now on SATA 2.  Put it on SATA 0.

2) Put the new drive on SATA 1, and then turn it to AUTO in bios.

Many thanks for your reply

1) You moved the cables.  The original Drive is now on SATA 2.  Put it on SATA 0.

I put the original drive back on Sata 0.
I then rebooted.
"Boot device not available"
Drive 0 : SATA-0
Drive 1 : SATA-2

Drive 1 not found : serial ATA, SATA-2.

2) Put the new drive on SATA 1, and then turn it to AUTO in bios.

There is no SATA-1, only SATA-2.
There is also no "AUTO" option anywhere in the bios settings (?).

I have now tried various combinations of sata data cable swaps and drives in different positions.

The fact that the Dell manual said "place the new (2nd) drive in the lower bay and bob's yer uncle" made it sound like a walk in the park (with or without dog).

So I am somewhat perplexed at finding myself in such a situation, which is now causing me to have doubts about the hardware. I can't even get the system to recognise that there is a 2nd drive waiting to be formatted/allocated.

GOOD GRIEF.

Unplug the new drive.  Boot with only the old drive on the SATA 0 position.  If it works, then disconnect it, plug in only the new drive on the SATA 0 position.  Boot with the XP CD in the CD drive, try and start an install.  If it doesn't let you, new drive is bad.  If it does let you, try with the other data cable.

Hi Rick

I carried out the following

  • Switched off SATA-2 at bios level.
  • Booted the original drive in the SATA-0 position - OK
  • Rebooted the original drive in the SATA-0 position, having swapped data cables - OK. This proves that both cables are ok.
  • Installed new drive in SATA-0 and booted via XP cd. Could not install XP as setup did not find any hard disk drives.

Now the only other question that remains is this - the new drive is a Samsung SP2504C, which is a Sata 3.0Gbps drive. Can the dell motherboard see this drive in this mode, or do i need to apply the jumper setting to make it 1.5Gbps ?  i.e. is this possibly the cause of my problems? I trust samsung products so am i little surprised/disappointed if it's actually a 'dead' drive considering that it's brand new.

Again, thanks for your assistance

Further to my last posting, i thought i'd try applying the jumper setting to the new drive to make it 1.5Gbps
This doesn't seem to have made any difference - the drive is still not being picked up..

Original drive in SATA-0 position
New drive (with jumper applied) in SATA-2 position
Booted up - "Drive 1 not found, SATA-2".
Pressed F1 to continue
"No boot device available"
- so now it seems to have lost visibility of the original drive in SATA-0 (all cables checked for correct fitment etc)

I then tried disabling the new drive using F2 Setup, SATA-2 = Off.

Rebooted.
"Drive - not found, SATA-0"

I then removed the data cable from new drive in SATA-2 position.
System rebooted OK from original drive.

Make of that what you will !

I can't think of anything else to try.
