Workload characteristics for SAP replication using MirrorView / A

Teams..

My previous questions regarding whether to use MirrorView / A for SAP were answered and there's some additional information I would like..

In the whitepaper, Best Practices for Implementing SAP on EMC, the section on MirrorView states that

Depending on recovery-point requirement and workload characteristics, MirrorView/A can absorb the peak-load bandwidth requirement for remote replication by buffering and replicating during times of inactivity and can operate on much lower bandwidth than that of the peak load.

My customer has a 300 MB pipe between 2 locations that are 10 miles apart and are considering using MirrorView / A for replication..

Are there ballpark workload characteristics, or latencies, or RPOs, database sizes, differences based on SAP modules that they should be considering ?

Will the EMC Remote Replcation Designer tool help in producing an appropriate MirrorView recommendation.. ?

Thanks

Saty,

I'm not familiar with Remote Replication Designer. Is that the correct name? The two tools I'm aware of is BCSD and ET Tool for sizing remote replication. Between the two, ET is the only tool specifically designed for sizing MirrorView solutions. If the SAP environment already resides on an EMC array you can use either .btp files (DMX/VMAX) or .nar files (Clariion/VNX) along with a list of replicated devices. If SAP is currently not on an EMC array then you can collect host based data like PERFMON or IOSTAT files. The tool will help you verify you have sufficient bandwidth and what RPO you can expect. It can also do the reverse. If the customer has a specific RPO then the tool can help you determine the bandwidth needed. I highly recommend you size your MirrorView solution.

Also, you should size your SAP landscape. This is separate to the MV sizing. For more information on that go to - https://community.emc.com/docs/DOC-11310

The ET tool and Remote Replication Designer are one in the same.

Thanks Chris..

Your comments and answers were very helpful..

Looks like we have all the information we need to position EMC/ SAP in this account..

Thanks again
