R650 10 bay with U.2 NVMe SSDs

Hello,

I am trying to find out what I need in order to get my Dell PowerEdge R650 10 bay SFF server to accept U.2 NVMe SSDs in the backplane.  I have confirmed I have a NVMe backplane and compatible drives, but I think I am missing some additional cards or cables to get the drives to work.  Could someone please provide some insight into what I need in order to get U.2 SSDs to work in this server?  I am currently planning on using the S150 software RAID, but I am open to suggestions if I need to add a hardware RAID controller.

Thank you!

CloudPower,

Would you confirm how your server is currently cabled by reviewing page 53-58 here and then let us know? On a side note, you would probably want to consider using a hardware controller like the H755N (part # T4FH6), in my opinion.

Chris,

I assume you mean in the Installation and Service Manual.  I looked at the images and I believe I am trying to replicate the way the server is cabled in figure 48.  My server does not have the "Paddle R1D" connection, or any cables that would run to/from that.  I am trying to find out if that Paddle R1D + any necessary cables are what I need in order to use NVMe drives.

I have cables that run from the backplane to the board, but none that run to the rear of the server like in the two 10 x 2.5 diagrams in that manual.

I hope I have provided you with enough information.  Please let me know if you need anything else to diagnose what is going on here.

Thank you!

Hello for this situation, from what I see, as there are no “kit”s that you can upgrade or expand to, we can not tell whether it’s going to be absolute success or not. Either you try it yourself and learn from those who have experience with the same. Sorry I can’t be much of help this time.

Do you happen to know the Dell part number on that "Paddle R1D," and any cables that connect to it?  Based on the cabling diagrams in the manual, I believe that is what I am missing.

The cable in question appears to be part # 57X79.

Let me know if this helps.
