R630 cannot access IDRAC 8 from web UI due to half duplex NIC

Hi,

I was connected to my IDRAC 8 and setting the NIC interface to hard code duplex and speed. Its connected to a Cisco switch 2960 on vlan 1. Once I saved the settings I lost connectivity to the IDRAC. The switch then showed the interface connection in half duplex mode. Both NICs are 1GB. I have tried resetting the IDRAC to default factory settings and for whatever reason it does not seem to be negotiating with my switch. I tried it on another switch and have the same issue. I plugged my laptop into the switch port to see if their were any issues with negotiation and there are not. I followed the power drain procedure on the R630 to reset the IDRAC and still the NIC wants to use half duplex which does not allow me to connect to it even if I use a static IP and if I set it to dhcp it will not acquire a IP. Laptop acquires an IP on the same port when testing. I have a USB A to A cable and a VGA cable coming tomorrow but my VGA to HDMI does not seem to work when connecting to either the front vga port or rear vga port. Is there another power source on board the server besides the CMOS battery which I have also pulled ?

Hello, you need to connect it directly to laptop and test-

if NIC gets to some weird speed or half duplex it means it does not negotiate properly with the switch

You can use idrac direct as well if they the have right cable.

(just so you know the article is for Gen 14 servers, so the cable is different)

@DELL-Young E

Hi,

I am familiar with this way to connect to the BIOs & IDRAC. I have a VGA cable and USB - A cable coming today and I will try it out. My VGA to HDMI cable for whatever reason had 0 signal to a 32 inch TV I had tried to access it with. Ill post my results once I have both cables. Its very odd though why the IDRAC decided to go half duplex once it was hard coded with FULL DUPLEX and SPEED 1000 considering the switch port was configured the same. I could not find any bugs filed for this behavior.

@DELL-Young E Hi , I am able to access the idrac config via VGA. I set the interface to auto which it is negotiating to speed 1000 duplex auto. However I do not see the idrac nic in the bios. I have link lights on the idrac nic interface however I cannot ping it. The idrac is set t dedicated not to lom1 - 4. The NIC is on vlan 1 10.27.27.0/24. The reason I mention the idrac nic is I cannot ping it. I do not see it in the sh mac address-table output on the switch. I am going to work on this more tomorrow. Any ideas you might have much appreciated. I tried DHCP but still did not get an IP hence why I configured it for static. A sh vlan brief displays the 1/0/31 port the dedicated NIC is plugged into is in vlan 1 ( default ) which is also configured in the idrac. One more thing I just reliased, I dont think this is a NIC issue I believe the idrac should be displayed on the LCD directly connected to it when in fact I basically see options for the bios or idrac. I am guessing I need to point the system to boot to the idrac but not sure how to do that or where to start.

One more thing I can directly connect to the idrac over usb a to usb a. idrac is enabled but I am still unable to connect to the idrac over my network where as before I had this issue I was able to. I am wondering what I might be missing in the idrac that might have been disabled that needs to be enabled.

Hello, at this point, I would try iDRAC reset. (directly to PC and the NIC port)

If that doesn't work, it could be the network port issue.

@DELL-Young E Thanks for the info but I eventually figured it out. It seems there is an issue when you change the interface speed from auto to speed 1000 and full duplex. It reverts to half and 100. Then on top of it , do not have the vlan configured on the idrac as it causes some sort of failure to communicate on the lan. Once I connected to it with a USB cable I was able to change these two configs and it started responding.
