Lifecycle controller update through idrac web-is this the procedure? is the behaviour normal?

Hi i have a couple of R420 servers which had an idrac problems. I solved the issue updating the firmaware through the SD card. I used the same version that were running before(1.57.57).
Now that I can access the Idrac web, I loaded the license, and the only following thing that remains me to do is to load the idrac configuration file.
So, for the messages I received via ssh, it seems that in order to load the configuration I need the lifecycle controller instaled and running.
And as this idrac version doesn´t include the lifecycle controller, and also in the idrac web the lifecycle version says 0.0.0.0, I downloaded the "Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_TR4J7_WN64_1.4.2.12_A00.EXE" file from Dell web.
And here the doubts arise.

1)When trying to download that file through the Idrac web, I noticed that you have to try many times, in order to make the load button to get to work. Most of the times it seems to do nothing, I´d like to know why it behaves like that.

2)Once you get to download the package, and you click on install. You get the rac0603 message saying to check the job list, and if you
look at it you see that lifecycle controller is in use, and that the job will start when LC will be available.
I don´t see the proceess to be running or starting, but after some minutes(more than 20 as far as I remember) of refreshing the page, I get that the operation failed.
I repeated the operation, and noticed that the second times it worked(despite of the more than 20 minutes I had to wait).
Somewhere in the middle of the operation in point 2, anxiety wons me, and I checked the lifecycle controller state at F2 option after booting. I found that LC was in recovering mode, and I changed to enable state. Perhaps this affected the operation.
I also remember seeing once a "SUP0108 a firmware update operation is already in progress" message.

Just wanted to know if was doing something wrong on both points, if the behaviour and time duration is normal, or if there is another procedure.

Kind regards

The steps you are trying is correct. Sometime we seen this kind of issues when old iDRAC FW is used with latest browsers which might not be compatible. I hope your issue is resolved and you got LC firmware updated.

Thanks for the feedback Young.

I had already done those tips, but they didnt work.

The only thing that woked was to use the SD card with an idrac firmware.

But there is only one equipment in which it also didnt work the SD card procedure, and We get an alert, saying idrac is not responding, rebooting. We also get the warning  Idrac initialization error.

If We go to the system setup program, in Idrac settings We see the message SWC0700: idrac is not ready. The configuration values cannot be accessed.

We think that there is nothing to do with this mother, except to use it without idrac. But if you have any idea to try, is welcome.

Kind regards

Hi Shine, thanks for your feedback too.

We had a couple more servers with the same Idrac/lifecycle problem, and despite We solved it.

We still have some doubts about how did We get the lifecycle part to work again.

I did a little resume of what We did yesterday, just in order give the doubts an scenario. But you or someone who reads this can go direct to the final three questions.

We finally used Firefox, instead of Chrome, and the download button worked fine.

Then We tried to download the LC file and it failed. So as the web seemed to be doing nothing We tried to cancel the download and We got the RAC0612 message and selected Yes in order to cancel the operation.

After that, a RAC0506 message appeared saying that We don´t have anough privileges to perform that operation. But anyway the actualization menu was enabled again, and We tried to download the file for a 2nd time(it happened before with other servers, the 1st attempt it always fails). And a new message appeared, SUP0108, saying that it was already another firmware update operation.
Not sure if We waited for more than 30 minutes, and nothing happened, and then reset the server. And after logging again on the Idrac web, the package appeared as downloaded....or if after more than 30 minutes it simply changed the state to package successfully downloaded...or how did appear the successfull message.

Anyway, once the package was successfully downloaded We clicked on the install button, and We got a RAC0603 saying that the update job was on hold.
On the Job list, the task figured as new. And there was a message saying "RED023 Lifecycle controller in use. This job will start when lifecycle controller is available"(it also showed something like startime: not applicable, expiration date: not applicable)
Back on the update menu a SUP0108 message appeared saying that it was already in progress a firmware update operation.

Again...this time I also dont remember well how did we get it to work...We waited for half an hour and nothing happened(this for sure).
Then my mate got into the system setup program, and then into the lifecyclecontroller menu, and disabled de the lifecyclecontroller and cancelled all the operations, and then the system rebooted.
Not sure, if it was because of lifecycle controller configuration change, or the reboot, that in the Idrac update page, the automatic updated menu was enabled. And then I disabled the automatic update and pressed the program update button(I got failure message as far as I remember saying something related to complete all the other update program configuration, so I pressed the other button, erase configuration).

After that, when changing to the task list page, the LC firmware update figured as completed.
And Im not sure, if this last attempt to change the configuration was the cause that it worked.

Synthesizing the doubts.
As We still have a couple more servers that require a lifecycle update. We have 3 doubts, so if someone has any idea, it will be welcome.

1)On the update Idrac´ web page, on the download stage, when you get the LC download fail message. There is no sign on the web page that something could be happening. What should We do next?

2)On the job list Idrac´ web page, on the installation stage, when you have the "RED023 Lifecycle controller in use. This job will start when lifecycle controller is available" and the LC firmware update doesnt perform or has signs to be progressing. What should We do next?

3)why in some idrac updates, after you get into the idrac web, the lifecycle cotroller version figures 0.0.0.0 and sometimes as 1.4.2.12 (but anyway there is a warning message saying that it has to be updated).

Kind regards

Hi, on 1) and 2), it is nearly impossible for us to troubleshoot unless we and figure out what triggers the symptoms. Going forward you could use

“Update PowerEdge Servers with Platform Specific Bootable ISO “for updates

https://dell.to/2LFRwAd

on 3)

“In iDRAC, if there is no link that is detected in the selected iDRAC port then the iDRAC IP is displayed as 0.0.0.0.”
