1700 "load paper" message

This printer worked great for the first 8 months, then quit feeding paper from tray 1.  I've read all the info about cleaning the rollers, turning them inside out and switching them around.  All to no avail!  I can hear it click, but the arm doesn't come down to pick up any paper.  Is there a simple fix?  New parts?  The manual feed works like a charm, but what a hassle.  I'm going broke on inkjet cartridges in my other printer!

Any input appreciated-

Katie,
I have the same problem. My 1700 worked fine for over two years and two days ago after loading an empty tray it would "click" then give me a "load paper" error message. Like you i discovered that the rubber wheels are turning but the balck arm is not dropping down on the stack of paper. becasue it happened so suddenly, I suspect a solenoid failure on the left side. The arm seems to be powered by a set of white gears. I think a solenoid engages the white gear to the black arm.
I have found six of us with the same problem so far with the same problem but no solution yet.
Any luck since your post?

Please read this response that "the llynster"  made that helped someone else with the same problem.

Old post, I know, but... this worked for me!

My 1700n was not able to feed any paper at all. I could here the feed gears click and spin but no paper movement, then "load | remove paper" light started burning. Replacing the drum did not have any effect.

Until I cleaned the feed wheels with some handsoap, like the "the llynster" pointed out.

I can use my 'old' printer again :emotion-1:
