Single Laptop, Multiple Dell WD19DCS Docking Stations
Anyone else try, or rather, having issues (maybe even successful) getting a single laptop (Dell Precision 7560) to connect to 2 different (not at the same time) same model docking stations?
I have a Dell Precision 7560, Windows 11 Enterprise -- latest drivers, firmware, etc., on both docks and the laptop. My experience is the same each time using the WD19DCS.
- Connect to dock at work -- no problems.
- Connect to dock at remote location -- Everything works, except Realtek USB GbE Family Controller (Device Manager shows <!> Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed) within the Universal Serial Bus controllers section).
- Perform the exercise below to get the GbE controller to register properly.
- Connect to dock at work -- no problems.
- Connect to dock at remote location, repeat step #3.
- Connect to dock at work -- no problems.
WASH, RINSE, REPEAT.
If I perform the following steps, I get the GbE controller to work:
- Disconnect both DP cables that connect the dock to the laptop (laptop remains on).
- Remove problematic <!> Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed) from Device Manager.
- Disconnect power from the dock.
- Press and hold the power button on the dock for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect power (power light rapid flashes 3 times).
- Reconnect both DP cables that connect the dock to the laptop.
- GbE controller works!
Prior to this exercise, I've been able to successfully use the following configurations -- laptop connected to WD19DCS at work and:
- WD15 elsewhere (with a secondary charger plugged into the laptop).
- WD19TB at remote office (with a secondary charger plugged into the laptop).
- WD22TB4 at remote office (with a secondary charger plugged into the laptop).
I've tried everything I can think of:
- Swapping, switching, disconnecting, etc., every connected device -- same result.
- Remove driver set manually (PNPUTIL) and via MSI/EXE and re-install/repair -- same result.
- Switched docks (I.e., moved work dock to remote office) -- same result.
- Switched power supplies between the docks -- same result.
Things I am unable to attempt:
- Connect problematic dock to another laptop (unfortunately, I don't have another dual DP ported laptop).
- Downgrade firmware on the problematic dock (at least I wasn't able to locate how that might be performed). I did upgrade the firmware to the latest as part of this exercise, but it didn't change anything.
Problematic dock is under a Basic (exchange) warranty, but since the problem is "sporadic", it doesn't seem (to me) a replacement is necessary at this juncture.
