Request for Assistance: Laptop Not Entering Sleep Mode When Lid Is Closed

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to report an issue with my Dell laptop, which is not entering sleep mode automatically when I close the lid. Despite ensuring that all necessary settings and configurations are in place, the problem persists, and I have to manually put the system into sleep mode every time.

Here are the steps I have already taken to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Verified the power settings to ensure the "Close Lid" action is set to "Sleep" for both battery and plugged-in modes.
  2. Updated all relevant drivers, including the BIOS and chipset drivers, using Dell's SupportAssist tool.
  3. Checked for any pending Windows updates and ensured that the operating system is up to date.
  4. Tested the behavior on battery power and while plugged in, with no success in either case.

Despite these efforts, the issue remains unresolved. I kindly request your assistance in diagnosing and resolving this problem. If there are any additional steps or configurations I should try, please let me know.

For your reference, the details of my laptop are as follows:

  • Model: dell precision 5530
  • Operating System: Windows 11

Thank you for your support. I look forward to your guidance in resolving this matter.

Best regards,
Shahzad Ali

Hi Shahzad,

Thank you for sharing the details of the issue and the steps you've already taken to troubleshoot your Dell Precision 5530. Since the problem persists despite your efforts, here are a few additional steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check Power Plan Settings

Ensure that the active power plan is not overriding the "Close Lid" action:

  1. Open Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Select your current power plan and click Change plan settings.
  3. Click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Under Power buttons and lid > Lid close action, verify that "Sleep" is set for both battery and plugged-in modes.

2. Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup may interfere with sleep mode. Try disabling it:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  2. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  3. Uncheck Turn on fast startup under the Shutdown settings and save changes.

3. Test with Minimal Background Processes

Some applications or processes may prevent sleep mode.

  1. Open Task Manager and check for any applications that might be running in the background.
  2. Temporarily disable any third-party software, including antivirus programs, and test again.

4. Inspect Event Viewer Logs

Use the Event Viewer to identify errors related to power management:

  1. Open Event Viewer (search in the Start menu).
  2. Navigate to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Look for recent logs around the time the lid is closed, especially errors or warnings related to "Power" or "Sleep."

5. Perform a Clean Boot

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
  3. Go to the Startup tab in Task Manager and disable all startup items.
  4. Restart your laptop and test if the issue persists.

6. Run Dell Diagnostics

To ensure there are no underlying hardware issues:

  1. Restart the system and press F12 during boot.
  2. Select Diagnostics from the boot menu and let the test complete.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be worth considering reinstalling Dell SupportAssist or resetting your Windows power settings to default using:

bash
Copy code
powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

Please update me on your findings. If the problem persists, feel free to share additional details, and we’ll be happy to assist further.
