Precision 7550 CPU Throttle

Precision 7550; i7 10850H CPU @ 2.70GHz; Win 10 Pro

  1. Prior to plugging in a WD19TBS, task manager would show my CPU speed varying from 0.8 up to 4.3GHz (or so). Nice and fast.
    1. BIOS (1.7.0) shows turbo boost on
  2. Plugged in the WD19TBS dock, and the cpu seems stuck at 0.81GHz, no matter what we plug into/out-of the dock, what programs are running, etc.
    1. Unplug dock and restart--no change.
    2. Unplug dock and cycle power: CPU back to 4.3GHz.
    3. Plug dock back in--CPU steadily downgrades to 0.8GHz in about 5-10 seconds
  3. Dell support diddled with the system:
    1. Installed bios 1.8.0--no change
    2. Disabled some Windows services (non-MS)
    3. Went in to Dell Power Manager and chose "Ultra Performance"
    4. Set regedit key Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm from 3 to 4
      1. CPU now runs at 2.7GHz at all times
  4. I then made the following changes:
    1. reset the intelppm/start key back to 3
    2. Unplugged dock
    3. Changed Dell Power Management to "Balanced"
    4. Cycle power: CPU now stuck at 0.81GHz.
    5. Changed Dell Power Management back to "Ultra"
    6. Cycle power: CPU now "stuck" at 2.7GHz. It's a noticeable slowdown.

How do I get my system back to where it was before all this started? I don't even care to get the dock working with it right now...I need my speed back.

BIOS 1.8.0 is your problem, I installed it from 1.7 and had the exact same slow problem.  I then "downgraded" the BIOS to 1.7 and my speed returned to normal.

The downgrade posted in this thread is the best workaround for now, but there should be an update coming soon to address this - with that said, our team is aware of this but I don't have any further updates at this time.

I will try to post here once the update is live and I know this is currently only a workaround but I wanted this to be highlighted for others here.

BIOS version 1.8.1 was just released to address this issue with the CPU clock speed throttling.

I saw the problem first when I still had 1.7 installed. I'll give it a try, though. Thanks.

Yes, going back to 1.7 lets my cpu go up to 4+GHz. Of course the dock won't work on 1.7 (and wasn't working on 1.8, either). Dell is providing support, so that's good. We'll see where this goes.

I had the same issue tonight with both of my 7750 systems. Going from 1.7.0 to 1.8.0 limits them to 800Mhz ish when AC powered. Unplugging the power adapter lets them speed up to normal battery operation speed.

Rolling back the bios to 1.7.0 corrects the issue. (I even tried a factory defaults reset with the 1.8.0 bios and it made no difference).

When I plugged the AC adapter back in (with 1.8.0) would let it speed up for about 20 seconds - then it settles back down to the 800Mhz ish.

I am experiencing the same thing on 7550 system.  I've rolled back to 1.7, from 1.8, and so far the problem went away.

I also have this problem - Gessing this wasn't tested before it was released to us, thanks Dell.

Downgrade from here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/precision-15-7550-laptop/drivers

I'm having the same issue. Updated to 1.8.0 and getting severe throttling at 800mhz. Precision 7550.

And don't forget the "Run as Administrator" step as the first time I tried to downgrade I forgot to do that - and the windows program goes through all the slow downloading - but of course it does not trigger the Bios update/downdate when it is next reset.

Same problem here! Laptop is unusable, clockspeed at 830 MHz.

 Precision 7750; i7 10850H

Updated BIOS to v1.8.0 and CPU slows down to 800MHz when AC is plugged and battery is not charging, but CPU runs normally when battery is charging or discharging.

Just downgrade to 1.7.0 and you will be fine until an update is released.

Thanks! It's always nice to hear from Dell. I'll tell the support people to hold off on replacing my motherboard.

I am so glad I found this forum. I was going mad trying to figure out why my pc was running sooooo slooooooooow and killing my internet speeds with it. I could not do anything like I normally do. Downgraded to previous and now it is back up and running like it was before. Dell, you guys should have thoroughly tested this before releasing it to the public. I almost threw my laptop out the window!! Lucky I did not give up on finding the solution. Kudos to all the users in here who figured out what to do. Thank you all.
