External display on 7540 with Ubuntu does not work anymore
Since a few days colleagues using a 7540 complain about not being able to use external displays anymore. Neither HDMI nor DP does work. As this problem occurred during the last days on all machines of this type, we assume a software problem caused by a recent update. We are using Ubuntu 18.04 with the commercial nvidia drivers.
Anyone else encountered this problem? Any ideas where to start searching for a solution?

We are using the proprietary nvidia drivers for this model. The installed version was 435. Ubuntu offered no update for this version, but if offered version 440 as an alternative. So I tried version 440. After the switch the external monitor worked - but not the internal display. It turned out to be a problem with file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
This file contained only settings for the external display. Truncating this file and restarting the system with attached external display (in case of an empty file the system searches for attached devices) fixed this problem.
BTW: Dell advised me to reinstall the whole system.
