Supported Memory in Dell Precision 7920 Tower

Good evening,

could you please clarify if the 7920 Tower supports the following 64GB RDIMM RAM: MFG Part: MTA36ASF8G72PZ-2G9E1. I purchased several RAM modules but the computer does not turn on (even when only 2 are installed w/o the original memory).

My checkout cart only says DDR 2933 RDIM ECC Memory, and I think this is ambiguous, i.e., it could mean RDIMM or LRDIMM.

Even more confusing ( to me), crucial.com says:

Max DDR4 LRDIMM: 3TB
Max Registered DDR4 SDRAM: 1.5TB

which I think would mean 24*64G =1.5T Gigs of RDIMM.

Thank you for any clarifications,

Kai

Hello

https://eu.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/precision-7920#memory

If you check, they propose 5 different kind of modules compatible with the 7920 . The one you purchased isn't in that list. At 64gb of capacity, they are all LRDIMMs (the compatible)

Thanks for the reply.

This is the memory that came inside the Towe (and thus it works):

Micron 64GB DDR4-3200 RDIMM 2Rx4 CL22 | MTA36ASF8G72PZ-3G2E1 | Crucial.com

(this is what I have, except I have an additional “VL” lettering at the end – these last couple of letters usually indicate some minor change to the design)

The crucial website says: Sorry, this part will not work with your Precision 7920

But it clearly does.

Further, this is also an RDIMM.

Replacing these 2 RAMS with two of the newly bought RAM sticks (just those 2 slots) does not work.

Well... so you have TWO of those 64gb memory sticks ( the 3200Mhz ) installed stock.

My problem is that there's no configuration supposed to work with just 2 modules. For all I know you got lucky with those 2 specific modules due to the latency of 22, and now are hitting the reality due to the latency of 21 of those modules you purchased.

Did you buy enough modules to actually fulfill one of the cases detailed in the table ?
