RTX 2060 super or 2070 super on ubuntu linux - Precision 3640 tower workstation
I contacted dell sales yesterday to get a quote of my customised 3640 precision desktop, they said that they are not able to select rtx super cards (2060 super) with ubuntu and ubuntu does not support super cards. Is it true? because according to my knowledge it works.

Unless you purchased system from dell with Linux there is no support.
Power supply for the gpu is also limited so if you only have 300W or less then it may never be an option. The 550W power supply is an option not standard. RTX 4000 is the custom build option

@DELL-Chris M might have more information.

Restricted drivers are not installed by default.
There is support for linux from various vendors but its not free.
You need to install the 455 version of Nvidia drivers.
Run in a terminal

NVIDIA says RTX 2070 SUPER that the minimum power supply is 650 watts and there is NOT a 1000W option for the power supply on the precision 3640
If you get an aurora you need to get your own Linux support because dell doesnt offer this model with linux.

I think that the Power Supply is the limiting factor.
Well... actually GETTING an RTX 2060 may be the limiting factor.
There is no overwhelming issues regarding running an RTX card in a Dell machine running Ubuntu I think. I'm running an RTX 2080 Ti on my T7910.
But be careful to order a machine that Dell has in-stock parts for. I ordered a Dell part and it looks like the delivery time may be April.

Supported by OS and supported by DELL are different things. That means, no guarantee, use it on on your own.

Agree about the "use at your own risk". But Dell is selling 3640 with a lot of these with pretty good cards (nvidia P4000, for example). And they work with Ubuntu. I found it took some fiddling to get the right driver installed, but I'm quite happy: dual 2699A cpus, 128Gb, and an nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, in Ubuntu 20.04. Pretty much rocks.

nvidia P4000 is not a good card. it is an overpriced... welll, nothing of a GPU. It is not much faster than a GTX 780Ti, but many times more expensive. OK 8Gb of RAM, but where do you need these with such performance? Useless in computation, not so good in games. Multimonitor output can be achieved with cheaper cards.
>And they work with Ubuntu. ?
Like there is a problem of finding something that works with Ubuntu...
No, I would say, there are too many overpriced cards offered with branded workstations. Corporate market is not so picky to price/performance ratio after all, so for personal use you should not care much about Dells limited variety of cards. Buy at Amazon, try it; there is a sure moneyback policy. The reason for buying Dell is a firm chassis and good reliability. Out-of-band management is for corporate market, it is not so useful at home. So, Dell is not a high-performance choice, but a choice of reliability.
