Precision 3630 doesn't have microphone?

I am trying to do screen recording. But the software tells me there is no microphone. Is this true? if yes, how to add a microphone?

Depending on which type of audio device you want to use, you must select and confirm to a popup when plugging in your device in order for the system to recognize it.  If needed, a proper adapter can resolve your issue as well.  For example, if you use a headset with 2 separate plugs and you want to use the input port at the front of machine, you might need an adapter which can take both connectors.

On the back of your machine, there is a light green port (#10 in picture), it is used for output only, such as external speaker, headphone, audio-out.

At the front of your computer, there is an input port (#3 in picture), which can be used for multi devices such as headphone, headset, microphone, audio line-in.  Each time you use this port, a popup on screen asking to confirm, you must select the correct type of device and hit OK.

For your case, after plugging in the microphone, the popup might ask you to select mic-in or line-in, just select mic-in and hit ok.  That should allow the mic to work.

As for your inquiry about a PCI sound card, it is a legacy type, if you find one that works, it may not be much better performance than the built-in.

Desktops don't have microphones like laptops. They do have audio ports to connect external mics or headsets. You can add a sound card and/or recording equipment.

Could you please recommend a sound card to me?

I only have the "PCIx1 " slot available. All other PCIe slots are used.

I am not sure which types are compatible with the Precision 3630. All sound cards follow the same standard? I only need to have one. Cheaper is better.

I found the front #3 port doesn't work. I tried it with my earphones, nothing happens, no input and also no output. I tried to fix it by following some youtube videos. No luck to me. Those earphones work with my phone and my laptop. My bluetooth earphone works. It allows me to record and listen. The output port on the back works with my earphones.

The #3 input port requires a special microphone device? My phone earphones are not compatible with it?

Does the sound card comes with a microphone or I still have to plug in a microphone (for example my phone earphone) to the sound card?

A bit difficult to guess why the front input port doesn't work without asking some questions.  Have you run any Windows troubleshooting?  The front input port is universal and should be compatible with most audio gadgets.  Did you get a popup every times you plug in a device?  You may want to check audio driver and settings before writing it off for another sound card.

If you really want to get a PCI sound card, check on the zone and select one that has return option.  A PCI card would have a long inserting pins verse the short one of PCIe x1.  Another distinction is most of them would have included a game port, which no one use anymore.

Since PCI card is very old tech and a little difficult to install driver.  I think that you will be better off with an external USB sound card, such as a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Play 3.  But it's your machine, your choice.

If you are running a fresh install of Windows 10 or 11 you may find the front jack defaults to output only.  None of the Dell provided software will change this but if you download Realtek Audio Control window app and dive into the settings you can specify the front jack is a headset jack and the microphone will start working.  Posting this after pulling my hair out for an hour trying to get it working.

@JamesP Hi. I have same issue. What have you done to fix it? I am getting mad, and I cannot find any solution to work on internet.

Thank you for your reply.
