PV 110T SDLT 320 / Backup Exec - 0x17 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check error)

Dear All

I am using DELL PowerEdge6600 with Windows Ent Server

PV 110T SDLT 320 is attched on Bus Number 0, Target ID 6, LUN 0

Pilot Quantum Corporation Ver. 2.4.0.0 dated 03/06/2003

Firmware of the PW110T is 73.73

I do not know the firmware version of the SCSI controller. Dell Tech Support said it was the lastest version.

My problem is :

For last 6 moths I was using NtBackup (ver 5.2.3790.0 ) without any problem.

Since Last 1 month NtBackup crases with unknows reasons. There is no valuable information on sytem observer. I did not install a software on the system. I did not apply any ugrade patch etc...

As per Dell's Tech Support advice I installed Veritas BackUP Exec 9.1. I face the following Error

Final Error : 0x17 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check error)

DELL Replaced PV 110T  I still have the same error.

Wether I make a back-up of an entire paritition, folder or file the error code given by BackUP Exec is the same.

Can someone help me to find my way out ?

Thank you

Tuncay

Are you using the same piece of media to perform your backups? Have you tried a brand new piece?

When tech suppt replaced your drive did they also replace your terminator and cable? If not you may want to try that.

Thank you Bob

Are you using the same piece of media to perform your backups? Have you tried a brand new piece?.   I did not test with a brand new Tape

When tech suppt replaced your drive did they also replace your terminator and cable? If not you may want to try that. -  They did not replace nor the cable neither the terminator.

The reason Why I did not test new tapes and cables is beacause I tested The the new PV110T (with old cable + terminator and Tape) with the PV-Tools (From Quantum corp awailable in Dells Downloads ) I tested read-write capablities on 2 different ( both old) tapes. The result was successfull.

Should I really buy new tapes and cables ?

Thank you

I'm not sure PVtools has the ability to check for CRC errors during it's write test. I'm checking on that now.

Does your warranty not cover cables and terminators? Since you have had the drive replaced with no help the next step would be to replace both. If the media you are currently using is old it would be good practice to try a new piece.

Be sure to use Veritas drivers against your tape drive when using VBE. You can download the latest at www.support.veritas.com

Is the controller the drive hooked to a 39160?  If so you may want to put the tape drive onto channel 2, you might also try putting the card in a different PCI slot.

Thank you once again

The guarante cover cable and terminato as well but the technician did not replace them. I will ask Tech Support

for replacement. I will also purchase new tapes.

I am using Veritas drivers. I selected "use Veritas drivers" while installing.

PW110T is external.

It is plugged to Ultra SCSI 160 controller 0 Channel 1

SCSI subsytem has 2 contolllers identified as Channel 0 and Channel

Controller 1 has Channel 0  only

Please inform where should I move the Tape.

Many Many thanks

You just want to move the tape to a different channel of the same controller. So if it now is cabled to CH-A simply move it to CH-B or visa versa, this assumes you have nothing connected to the opposite channel. The channels are labeled on the back of the card.

If the onboard U160 (single channel) controller is cabled out the back of the server (connector is in the back top right) you can also connect the tape to it, again assuming nothing is already attached. This would actually be the best test to determine if your original SCSI controller is causing the CRC errors.

A quick check to see if any other devices are attached to the SCSI controllers is simply watch the server boot. During POST the SCSI controllers are listed with the devices that are attached to them. The single channel U160 controller will be listed as Adaptec AIC7892..., if no devices are listed under this controller and it IS cabled out the back you are free to connect your tape drive. The same goes for the opposite channel of your dual controller, it will be listed as Adaptec SCSI BIOS v3.10.0 .... if you don't see any devices listed with CH B then you are free to connect your tape drive to it.

Once you have recabled your tape drive re-run a backup hopefully the CRC's will cease. If they do this points to a bad controller card.

Hello Bob

I am coming back to complete this thread hoping that it can be useful for others.

Dell Replaced the cables and controllers. Nothing helped.

I bought new tapes. Now everything seems be be functionning.

I checked ALL my 6 old tapes. All of them failed. I guess old tape drive destoyed somehow my tapes.

I ll verify the data content of the new back-ups (NtBackup sent succesfull verify message) for a couple of days.

Thank you for your help
