PowerVault 3220i controller replaced but continue with Cache Backup Device Failed

Hi,

The recovery guru recommends replacing the RAID Controller Module because one of the controllers failed. I bought one from a company and installed it in the PowerVault 3220i but the Recovery Guru has the error Cache Backup Device Failed. I verified on the EMS The only difference is on Cache Backup Device is:

Module 0

Cache Backup Device
    Status:

Optimal
    Type: SD flash physical disk
Location: RAID Controller Module 0, Connector SD 1
    Capacity: 7,639 MB
    Product ID: Not Available
    Part number: Not Available
    Serial number: a00c5e50
    Revision level: 10
    Manufacturer: Lexar
Date of manufacture: May 1, 2011

Module 1

Cache Backup Device
    Status:

Optimal
    Type: SD flash physical disk
Location: RAID Controller Module 1, Connector SD 1
    Capacity: 7,580 MB
    Product ID: SU08G
    Part number: Not Available
    Serial number: 1d121607
    Revision level: 80
    Manufacturer: SanDisk
Date of manufacture: November 1, 2012

Does the Capacity need to be the same? or bring me the steps to solve this problem, please.

Thanks

Arn

Hi @Joey C,

Here is my solution:

After reading a lot of options and recommendations that don't work for me I decide to reset both RAID Controllers, first the one that was replaced, RAID Controller Module in Enclosure 0, Slot 1, and after verifying that everything works Ok did the same process on RAID Controller Module in Enclosure 0, Slot 0.

Here are the steps followed:

The yellow RAID Controller Module in Enclosure 0, Slot 1 (The one replaced)

  1. Select the raid controller that you go to reset (my case bottom Controller)(Enclosure 0, Slot 1)
  2. From the top menu Hardware > Raid Controller Module > Advance > Reset
  3. Follow the instructions in the reset windows and then select OK

Another option is:

  1. Select the raid controller that you go to reset (my case bottom Controller)(Enclosure 0, Slot 1)
  2. Right-click on the Controller > Advanced > Reset
  3. Follow the instructions in the reset windows and then select OK

Then I did the same procedure for the other RAID Controller (Enclosure 0, Slot 0)

The green RAID Controller Module in Enclosure 0, Slot 0

  1. Select the raid controller that you go to reset (my case top Controller)(Enclosure 0, Slot 0)
  2. From the top menu Hardware > Raid Controller Module > Advance > Reset
  3. Follow the instructions in the reset windows and then select OK

Another option is:

  1. Select the raid controller that you go to reset (my case bottom Controller)(Enclosure 0, Slot 0)
  2. Right-click on the Controller > Advanced > Reset
  3. Follow the instructions in the reset windows and then select OK

After this process went to Recovery Guru press Recheck and clears the message showing no failures

I hope this process helps other people.

Hi @Arn Torr,

From your output log, both are showing optimal status, have you tried rescanning in Recovery Guru? Which controller module was replaced? Do you have the newly replaced module DPN#? From the error "Cache Backup Device Failed" is pointing the issue to the cache module in the controller module. There is a build in module inside the controller, which can be removed and reseat, but I do not have the guide reference for you to refer. That might be able to help resolve the issue.

Hi @Arn Torr,

The article might have been removed. I can't access it either.

The DPN# is located physically on the controller, a small white sticker.

About the error you saw, did you try rescan in Recovery Guru?

Have you tried the steps provided in Recovery Guru to resolve the issue?
