Issues installing VMware Plug-in for Dell PowerVault ME Series
I'm following this guide to install the VMware vCenter Plug-in for Dell PowerVault ME Series Storage:
https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-th/powervault-me5012/me_series_vsphere_ug/
I've tried the install on two different Linux systems but have run into errors on both. Here's the output from the last installation attempt:
########################################
vSphere Client Plugin
########################################
The following values will be used to install the plugin:
vCenter User Name: administrator@vmw.local
vCenter IP Address: vcenter.XXXXXXXXX.com
Local port number: 18080
Local IP address: XX.XX.XX.XX
Are these correct? (yes/no)

Are these correct? (yes/no)
yes
vSphere-Client-Plugin-installer.sh: line 566: /bin/less: No such file or directory
Do you accept the terms of the End User License Agreement? (yes/no)
yes
chown: invalid user: 'vcplugin.vcplugin'
Installation is in progress...
Checking port may take 1-2 minutes...
Creating storage plugin service...
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/StoragePluginService.service -> /etc/systemd/system/StoragePluginService.service.
Storage plugin service created.
Unable to start java application. Please try again.
So the main thing that's standing out to me is the missing user vcplugin. I'm guessing this is why the service fails to start but I'm not sure where to add this. There's absolutely nothing in the guide about it. Also, it appears the installation is looking for a folder that's missing as well:
line 566: /bin/less: No such file or directory
Anyone have any tips on how I can get this installed and working?

I have a PowerVault ME5012 and I'm using this plugin:

We're running VMWare 7.0.3

Tim829s,
I have to say I haven't seen this yet personally. Would you do me a favor and confirm a couple things for me?
What is the specific plugin you are trying to install, do you have a link?
What is the specific Vmware version you are running?
Lastly, I know you are on the ME series, but what specific model are you seeing this on in this instance?
Also, if are able to, would you upload the storage logs to upload. dell. com and private message me the svc tag so that I mat locate them would be helpful as well?
Let me know and we can go from there.

Hello tim829s,
Portions of the plug-in run in the web browser and on the vCenter server, but the plug-in software itself must be installed and run on a GNU/Linux host.
And on that; Can you let us know what Linux OS and version you are using for this ?

The storage unit is brand new, just installed it yesterday.
Where should I be installing this plugin exactly? It's not very clear in the documentation.

I've only tried it on Photon OS, that might be part of the problem. I didn't want to have to spin up a dedicated linux VM just for this plugin.

Hello I'm afraid chances are Photon OS isn't supported by the plug-in you you use.

I would try it on a supported OS, and if it doesn't work then you may want to consider calling in to support, so they can work with it directly.

I deployed a CentOS VM and was able to follow the guide successfully.
I'm having another issue now though. VCenter shows the plugin PowerVault ME Series 1 .2.1.26 under Administration > Client Plugins but the status is showing "Failed". Here's the error code I'm seeing:

Tim829s,
This could be due to a multitude of reasons, but I would recommend checking to see if the proper ports (443, and 80) are open, and then retest. After that I would consider checking your network environment (network drops, connection refusals due to load, etc), as well as anything else that blocks Java natively.

Is VCenter trying to reach out to the VM I created for the plugin or to the internet? Where is it trying to download the plugin from?

I believe it is looking for both, and when not seeing it in it's enviroment it is looking outward. What you may want to do is to call in to support to get it investigated directly.
