Well,

normaly it starts with IOPS, Capacity, #of Host which needs to be connected (when we speak about Clustering vSphere ESXi or Hyper-V). The entry level external Storage is the Dell Powervault ME5.

Or are you asking about a single Server with local storage which is today a couple of RI SSDs running in a RAID6 Diskgroup?
