PowerPath Licensing

Hello - can I make a basic question and ask what is the basis of Powerpath licensing.

It appears to be CPU socket in some discussion document and Cores or CPUs (depending upon how you look at processor packages these days) in others. Obviously, the answer will produce quite a difference to compliance status.

Many Thanks

Hello John,

There are different type of licensing for Powerpath. There are two groups who can answer your query:

1) Your EMC account rep

2) EMC CSTs (you can dial 1-800-782-4362 and chose option 4 and then 1.

Please be ready with your Site ID and contact information given during the time of contract.

Please mark this reply 'answered', if this answers your query.

There is no generic answer which can tell us what the basic licensing model is for PowerPath on an IBM LPAR?

1) Do you have to license the entire Frame?

2) Do you just license the LPARs wher PP is installed?  (And is it by Core then not CPU?)

3) Some combination of the two?

Hard to believe there is no publicly published material which makes this clear.  I have been hunting for anything like it though and so far... nothing.

Last time I went through this we had a 24 CPU IBM P6 with 12 distinct systems (LPARs) on it.  We purchased one license for 24 CPU's which covered the entire box.  Its best to involve your account team as they have some options to tier the price based on system size etc. and can sometimes work their quote magic.
