Powerpath install error on RH Linux

I installed PP on Linux and got the error shown below. The system does not have any SAN disks attached yet. Is there something I should do to the system before zoning it to the array?  Thanks.

[root@naln05rh-tmp etc]# powermt version

EMC powermt for PowerPath (c) Version 5.6 (build 143)

[root@naln05rh-tmp etc]# uname -a

Linux naln05rh-tmp.firm.jonesday.net 2.6.18-308.el5 #1 SMP Fri Jan 27 17:17:51 EST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've only seen that error when a file system is mounted on a device controlled by powerpath.

"powermt display dev=all" isn't showing any attached storage?

No, that's why this is strange. This happened during install with no SAN devices yet.

So "powermt display dev=all" shows nothing?  Not even a phantom device?

Check out your "/etc/redhat-release" file... I'm thinking it may have been tweeked in some way...  It should just be one line.. something like "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release x.y(name)"

If it has anything else,  powerpath will fail to start...

But you are able to run powermt commands(as the above outputs are from same system) .

Check if powerpath is already installed.

Have you tried PowerPath Configuration Checker on downlaod from Online support to see if it can help you? (You need run EMC Grab first).  Personally I suspect there was powerpath installed and didn't uninstalled clearly on you host...

I'm going to hold off on this until I get some SAN disk attached. Stay tuned.......

What did your "/etc/redhat-release" file look like?

# cat /etc/redhat-release

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.8 (Tikanga)

As I mentioned in an earlier post, it seems you have powerpath installed in the host. Just try running powermt commands like powermt version, powermt check_registration etc...

If those are working fine, you don't have to worry for now. We can ensure everything is fine once the disks are available to the host.
