PowerPath and OS Replication/Imaging

NEED HELP FAST!!!

I have a Windows 2003 R2 Server running SP2. It's a Dell 2950, Dual Quad Core, 16GB RAM, RAID-1 pair of internal 73GB SAS Drives. I have two Qlogic 2460 4GB PCI-E HBA's connected (in a redundant configuraiton) to a pair of 9513's which are ultimately attached to a DMX-4 backend.

Config stuff out of the way...I have 8 of these machines, all with the same HW config, that will participate in a Windows cluster. I have built one machine and got it exactly where i needed it in regards to configuration and applications, including the latest version of PowerPath for Windows. Note: this first server has never been zoned/masked with disk and ECC agents have NOT been installed either.

My intent here is to sysprep this build and then image this machine to the other 7 for rapid deployment. I am now being told that I can't do this because PowerPath assigns a unique ID to the machine (or HBA's) and it will screw up clustering. This is the first time i hear about this...but...my question is, is this really true? Do i need to remove/reinstall powerpath?

(Note: We have always used Clariion systems in the past. The attached cluster hosts ran powerpath but also has the navi software installed as well. We just purchased this DMX and these are the first hosts going on it)

My understanding is that PowerPath will automatically adjust for new HBA's it see's and assign unique psuedo ID's for volumes as they get assigned to the server. In other words, I do not believe there is a problem here, am I correct?

Appreciate the timely response. So support issues aside, what I am hearing you tell me is that you can't think of any reason why this would not work or cause problems with Windows Clustering?

I would assume it would work and be ok because powerpath should sort of detect any changes and adjust accordingly, you might get some stale failed path entries that have to be removed manually.

I work in emc tech support, and what you are doing is not supported. we only support fresh installs of OS. the escalation path for tech support if a support case were to come in regarding an issue like this would be emc engineering.

not to say you can't do it :), but question is if you have issues it will not be supported today.

engineering states that you should consult with your local emc folks and request them to process a RPQ (request for price quote) that will go to engineering. if the RPQ goes through then engineering would make a decesion whether or not to support this type of senerio. if so then you would get direct support from engineering via the RPQ that was created if there are any issues.

i don't see why it would not work. Before you run sysprep make sure there is no powermt.custom file anywhere. If it's there ..delete it. It keeps persistent information about your paths.

We actually did something very similar a month back where we built a single image for four Exchange clusters being built for a total of 8 servers from a single image.

PowerPath was installed and copied along with the image and we had no issues getting clustering configured related to devices.

If you do install the ECC Agent you may need to follow the KB article emc92671 but this would work as well - especially if you just install the Master agent and do not start it prior to replication.
