Migrated to VNX from EVA, Installed PowerPath, Now extra "unknown" disks when opening diskmgmt.

Hopefully the title says it all.  But if not.

I migrated a Windows server from an older EVA to a VNX.  I am NOT familiar with any HP utilities that may have been installed on the server but believe only native multipahthing in windows was used.

So, I migrated to the VNX, removed the zones of the old array brought the server back online and when I open Powerpath.. its clean, only 1 array and 4/4 paths.  All luns online

When I open Disk Manager, I get a dialog box as if to initilize 4 LUNS.  Of course I do not, but need to clean this up and am not sure where to go to do so.

Any advice is helpful.

Thanks,

sounds like LUNZ's. communication luns when 1st connected to a VNX are auto setup.

article explaining below

will show luns as 4mb luns, can be safely ignored

also is attached an article showing how to remove the LUNZ if you dont want to see them in the disk manager

472131 : Removing a LUNZ - Windows server is showing a blank unknown/unreadable disk in Disk Management https://support.emc.com/kb/472131

I wanted to include one more article giving the steps to remove the LUNZ in a more concise manner.

362912 : LUNZ disks appear as unknown devices in Windows Disk Management https://support.emc.com/kb/362912

Please let me know if this is helpful in explaining and removing the unwanted LUNZ devices being described.

Otherwise please let me know if these luns are data luns and are larger than 4mb in disk manager, and well take different course of action.

Thank You.

How many LUNs have been presented to that host and what is the Host ID is set to in the storage group ?

You'll need to reconfigure Windows MPIO for the new VNX devices.

If he has installed EMC PowerPath, Microsoft Native MPIO configuration is not needed. PowerPath will use it's Clariion/VNX DSM

You need MPIO to be active - however you do not need to reconfigure it for EMC devices as PowerPath will do that for you.

The Extra unknown devices are called LUNZ devices and are present when either the host is not in a storage group or if the host is in a storage group and there are either no devices in the storage group or none of the devices in the storage group have an HLU (Host Lun Address) of 0.

Solution is to place the host in a storage group and assign a LUN to the storage group with a HLU of 0.

Thank you

PowerPath should do it for you but often doesn't. I've had numerous times where reconfig of MPIO is required due to duplicate devices being present in Disk Management.
