HP-UX: PowerPath doesn't see LUNs, but HP-UX does

After a power down on a HP-UX 11v31 machine the operating system sees all LUNs coming from a CX4 Clariion, but powermt display dev=all doesn't see any LUNs. On the Clariion in Unisphere I'm seeing the paths as active after the OS was booted, so the SAN is ok as well (all zones are correct).

We tried several scanning commands, but powerpath still doesn't see any LUNs.

  • rmsf -x (to delete possible stale disks)
  • powermt check force
  • ioscan -fnNC disk
  • insf -e -C disk
  • powermt config
  • powermt display dev=all

We tried rebooting the server, but although the OS seems to detect the LUNs, PowerPath doesn't see anything.

Does anyone have a clue what might be going on here?

PS I'm not an HP-UX guru, so be gentle with me here

I'm thinking of taking PowerPath out of the config and have MPIO do the work instead. Do I need to register the host differently on the Clariion (Unisphere) ?

In the host connectivity guide for HP-UX (300-000-614.pdf dated Oct 2012) I'm not able to find which failover mode and initiator type I need to use when registering the host. On page 186 of the document it states that with Powerpath I need to set it to failover mode 1, but I'm pretty sure that for my recent version of UX mode 4 is required. So I assume I'm looking in the wrong place. Any help is appreciated.

Hi RRR,

See emc99467 for details on initiator settings for CLARiiON/VNX arrays.

The correct failover mode for HP11.31 and all failover software is 4 (ALUA mode) So, no change required…

Thank you. After I verified the Primus article I will mark this question as helpful.

Does anyone know how to get the LUNs visible in PPath? The OS sees them after an IOSCAN, but in PPath I don't see them.

HI RRR,

As I understand you are able to see the devices on the host but unable to see those under powerpath control.

Things you need to check

1. Ensure the Failover mode is set to 4 and "Initiator Type" is set to "HP No-Auto Tresspass"(10) from the Storage end via Unisphere for the HBA which are part of this host

2. In case if you have change the failover/Init Type, you may need to reboot the host for the HBA to relogin and allow the host to update the correct config.

3. Ensure 'powermt display options' shows CLARiiON as managed. If not, then following emc211547

NOTE: There should no IO flowing via the EMC devices(i.e, when under LVM/VXVM, filesystems are not mounted) when you are trying to manage the devices under powerpath control.

4. If the Clariion is set to managed, run

# powermt config

# powermt display dev=all

I beleive the above should take care of the issue.

If you still have issue, please post the output of

# scsimgr get_attr -D /dev/rdisk/diskX  (replace diskX with any of the disk names)

# powermt version

# powermt display paths

# powermt display options

AvinashR,

we did all 4 points and still no luck (that's why I posted the question here ).

I will ask the admin to provide me the output of the commands you just gave me.

Also if possible, please post the /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file as well

The customer is first trying to install the unisphere agent. I'll keep you posted on the results.

Oops, ignore.  You mentioned it right in the title.  HP-UX host can see the LUN but not PowerPath.

Maybe the following KB article is relevant?  It was recently created.

emc302511: "HP-UX host cannot see LUN on CLARiiON array."

Hehehe, exactly

And besides that Primus iView is somehow inaccessible for me since 2 weeks, so I can’t view knowledge base articles anyway
