How to upgrade PowerPath from 5.3 to 5.7.5 in a rhel 5.7 Oracle RAC with ASM

Hello,

I need to upgrade PowerPath for Linux from 5.3 to 5.7.5 in an Oracle RAC with ASM environment.

The Oracle RAC consists of 2 physical nodes:

OS - rhel 5.7 x86_64

Oracle 11g release 2

ASM - all powerpath devices are RAW devices managed by ASM.

I'm having issues with the procedure to upgrade the powerpath,

I would like to do this procedure one node at a time,

The customer has shut down the CRS of the node by running:

srvctl stop crs

and then I tried to upgrade the powerpath but the script failed because the devices are still in use,

I don't know what is holding the devices, tried to find out through lsof but didn't find anything.

Are there any other services/processes that needs to be shutdown in order to be able to upgrade the PowerPath?

Is there any procedure that explains step by step how to run the upgrade in an Oracle RAC with ASM environment?

The upgrade procedure explained in the PowerPath install/upgrade guide for 5.7 does not explain how to run the upgrade in this kind of an environment (only for LVM environment).

Thanks in advance,

Ben Raz

Hi Ben,

Sometimes it happens, especially in the cluster environments - some process or threads won't release the locks, so you can't use the devices - it is mentioned in PowerPath Release Notes:

Paths not released in a cluster or LVM environment:
In a cluster or LVM (Logical Volume Manager) environment, host software may hold references to PowerPath or native devices. In such a situation, PowerPath cannot release one or more paths despite the device is removed or renamed. Reboot PowerPath for the host software to release these references.

If you can't find what's holding the devs (fuser, lsof, try to vgexport the VGs) you might need to reboot the host out of the cluster and try to upgrade then - should that not work, try the maintenance mode.

Hope that helps!

Pawel
