R730 + H330 best choice for Proxmox + ZFS?
I've been struggling with my R730XD server. I've tried using the H730p Mini controller in various modes (RAID, NON-RAID, HBA), but I've been running into problems because my hard drives aren't Dell certified.
I've heard that for my specific setup, which uses ZFS with Proxmox, the H330 controller is the recommended choice. I'm planning to buy one, but I have a few questions:
Does the H330 have to be in IT MODE?
Is it difficult to switch the H330 to IT MODE?
What's the difference between the H330 and the HBA330?
Will I still have problems with my non-Dell certified disks?
What controllers are similar to the H330/HBA330 for R720 and R710 servers?

Hello thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.
I'm afraid most of your questions should be addressed by the OS company-The OS you are using is not supported by Dell.
However for the question below,
What's the difference between the H330 and the HBA330?
You can refer to this older thread.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any further questions.

I would like to clarify a few things to ensure I have a correct understanding:
Is it accurate to say that the H330 is recommended for RAID configurations, while the HBA330 is preferred for non-RAID setups, specifically in HBA mode (or IT mode)?
Is the primary difference between these two cards the firmware, assuming they are essentially the same hardware?
And most importantly, is the H330 designed for the R730 server, whereas the HBA330 is specifically for the R740?
Is it possible to install the HBA330 in an R730 server?

Another question, if you allow me
Is it correct to say that the HBA mode of the H730p mini controller is basically a RAID 0 of the disks?
Is the NON-RAID mode also a RAID 0 on the disks?

@DELL-Chris H I'm wondering if the performance and capabilities of my H730p mini controller, configured in HBA mode, are equivalent to those of an HBA330 operating in IT mode. In other words, will I see any significant differences in terms of functionality or performance between the two? Or is it necessary for me to replace my current controller with an HBA330 to achieve the desired results?

I am not sure of the specific performance NUMBERS between them, but the H730p is going to be faster, as its HBA mode is simply a passthrough along with the fact that it also has cache memory, where the HBA330 doesn't. So really the big difference is that the H730p enables you to use raid and the cache memory.

@Bryam Balan Im doing the same thing with a T330. You can put the 730 or h330 in HBA mode. It will work but its not the same as say HBA330 or the flashing the h730/330 into IT mode. I think putting them in HBA mode via settings while easy is not the same. The raid controller will still boot the raid bios drivers which does slow the boot. I order a HBA330 just in case as flashing the h730 to IT mode has a few hoops to jump thought and the HBA330 just works and are cheap.
You won't have any speed difference, you are bypassing all the cool feature of the raid cards. Turning off the cache, etc. I've heard HBA mode works for most but a few people have claimed to have issues with it ending up getting HBA330s. I paid $20.00 for piece of mind and no need to fiddle with flashing.

@RAJ54
Thank you for your detailed report.
I strongly suspect that the root cause of the issue lies within the controller, either a hardware malfunction or a connectivity problem.
I have procured an HBA330 for diagnostic purposes and am awaiting its arrival to proceed with further testing.
I concur that operating the controller in HBA mode will necessitate foregoing certain cache-related features that are available in RAID mode. However, given that my drives are not Dell-certified, I anticipate encountering more complexities when utilizing the RAID configuration.
