Slow RAID5 after add disc

We have a Poweredge R710 server with a RAID PERC H700. We had working 4 x 1TB SSD discs working fine. Last month we add a 5th disk (on the second cabinet) and reconfigure raid with OMSA. We have Windows 2016 server installed and after expand volumen the disk perfomance has degraded. It start copying at 300 Mb/s but quickly down to 2 or 3 mb/s. The new disk is the same model than older.

We have changed disk and disk slot, but we don't find the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

First I recommend make sure you have a good backup.

Next; What steps did you follow to expand capacity?

If you have a link to document you used I can take that.

Check the iDRAC System Event Log (SEL) and the LifeCycle Controller logs for any related errors or faults.

Do you see any amber LEDs such front panel or hard drives?

Hi Charles,

I used instructions on this post:

‎Add a disk in a raid 5 | DELL Technologies

I haven't amber leds on front panel. and no errors in iDRAC system event log.

I'll need to restart server to check LifeCycle Controller logs. Try to checkt in on saturday or sunday.

Thanks.

Hello,

While onsite you may also run the diagnostics.

boot Press F10 in top right corner. Once the USC loads, select ‘Hardware Diagnostics’ in the left side and click ‘Run Diags’ in the body.

When the next page loads there will be 2 test available to run:

*Select MPMemory. One loop is fine. Note any messages and continue testing.

*Then run the 'Run Diags' select 'Express Test'. . Note any messages and continue testing.

You cannot export a log report of the diags so note down any errors.

Sorry, I don't know Dell systems very well, I normally work with HPE. I must do the tests with the iDRAC console, since I do not have physical access to the server. I also understand that I must restart the server to access Lifecycle.

Thanks!

Hi again!

I've checked Hardware Diagnostics in LifeCycle and all is working fine. No errors found, but hard disk perfomance is poor.

Thanks again

Hello Juan,

It's good to see it passed diagnostics and no errors found.

Make sure Windows updates are up to current.

Make sure the system is up to date on Dell drivers and firmware:

From the support site: https://dell.to/46pi0L9

Select your OS, use keyword search "server update utility", download the DELL EMC Server Update Utility for your OS

Installation instructions

1. Download the Full ISO file.

2. Use ISO mounting software and mount the downloaded iso image.

3. Browse to the folder.

4. Double Click suulauncher.exe.

Also check for any virus/malware.

Lastly be sure to keep good backups.

Hi again!

There is no DELL EMC Server Update por Windows 2019, that's the OS i have installed. I have read that is no support for this OS on R710, but it was working fine before add new disk.

I have checked virus/malware and the system is clean.

Maybe this problem is having a raid5 with 4 disk on cabienet 1 and 1 disk on cabinet 2?

Thank you

Juan Carlos

Hi,

Having a RAID5 array split across two cabinets can potentially introduce performance and reliability challenges, but it shouldn't prevent new disks from coming online.
