R720 SSD compatibility
Hi All,
I want to reuse one of our DELL R720 (previously used as ESX hypervisor, running on SD cards) as a physical Linux Server.
There where no hard drives provided, so I put a Samsung SSD EVO 860 500Go in slot 0 and a Samsung SSD EVO 870 2 To in slot 1 (no mirroring need). R720 has 8 slots in front, 3.5 size.
Disk tray removing are detected and appear on the front screen, nut none of the disk tray leds are lightning.
Initial BIOS configuration for SATA settings indicates "AHCI Mode" for Embedded SATA. I've tried to activate the S110 Controller by switching to "RAID Mode", but S110 configuration displays none of the SSD drives.
Is there something else to configure? llinked to BIOS version?
S110 should be SSD compliant according the S110 specifications.
Any help would be appreciate!
Thanks,
Thomas

No. If SAS A & B is connected as per below picture, then you need to have a integrated storage controller on slot 3 of below picture. Can you check that.
Below are list if integrated storage controller which is supported in R720
If you want to use embedded S110, you can try connecting as per figure 3 of the link. As this is not a supported configuration for 8 X 3.5 backplane it is not validated and I can not guarantee that it will work. For this you need to use cable with part# MPXC8

Can you check the connectivity of backplane. You can refer "Figure 1. Removing and Installing the 3.5 Inch (x8) SAS/SATA Backplane—PowerEdge R720" and "Figure 2. Cabling Diagram—3.5 Inch (x8) SAS/SATA Backplane—PowerEdge R720" for connectivity details for 8 X 3.5 drive backplane. 8 X 3.5 backplane also need integrated storage controller card to be installed on the server

Hi Shine,
Hard disk removal from the backplane are detected by the server (message on the digital screen on front panel), suggesting to me that the backplane are well connected?
Both SAS cables are connected to the motherboard like figure 2.
I have no other controller that the embedded S110 storage controller, but it should do the job?!

You need to have a integrated storage controller connected to slot 3 as per that diagram. S110 can not detect drives in this configuration. Only 4 drive system ("Figure 3. Cabling Diagram—3.5 Inch (x4) SAS/SATA Backplane—PowerEdge R720") support S110 in R720.

So you mean that I will have to connect SAS A cable to another motherboard connector and use slot 3? My current configuration is a 8x 3.5 backplane, and SAS A & B cables are connected like figure 2 in the documentation you provided.

Can you check whether H710 you connected have a battery on it. If it have a battery then you can give some time to see whether it is getting charged and error goes away after some time.
If not you need to connect a battery to remove that warning. 70K80 is the part number of battery for H710.
