Perc S150 Storage invisible on 14th gen R740, unable to setup raid

I recently purchased a refurbished 14th generation R740 server and performed a configuration reset to ensure that no unusual settings or configurations were left behind. However, I am encountering an issue where only the HBA 330 Mini recognizes the drives. Ideally, I would like the Perc S150 to control the drives for RAID support. Unfortunately, when accessing the RAID S150 BIOS Configuration Utility, no disks are visible, and there are no selectable options under the physical disks menu.

How can I disable the HBA 330 Mini and enable the Perc S150 to allow me to configure RAID on the new SSD drives (2.5" x 8)? Although I have confirmed that the PERC S150 is recognized in the configuration, I am unable to override the HBA 330 Mini (DP/N OP2R3R).

I have attached pictures of the internal cabling for reference. You can find the relevant information regarding backplane cable routing on page 121 of the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 Installation and Service Manual.

Any guidance on resolving the visibility issue in the RAID S150 BIOS Configuration Utility and the physical disks menu would be greatly appreciated.

I have set "Boot to System Settings > SATA Settings > Embedded SATA: RAID."

Hi,

It looks like your backplane is routed to connect to HBA330, which disallow you to use S150. PERC S150 is the onboard RAID controller, which means you need to route the cables to connect to the ports shown in Figure 3. Cable routing – 8 x 3.5 inch drive backplane with on board SATA ( https://dell.to/3RSVGCu) but, the backplane shown in the user guide is 8 X 3.5 instead of 8 X 2.5. I tried to look for cables for 8 X 2.5 to mainboard, but it is not listed. I only found 8 X3.5 to mainboard, which is DPN# JHVNC, but I am not sure if they are long enough.

is the correct part number 129TR for a 2.5 backplane?

"DELL DUAL MINI SAS HD CABLE ASSEMBLY (129TR)
FOR DELL EMC POWEREDGE R740 2.5 SFF 16B - 27.5 INCH / 28.5 IN ( 2 ) TWO SFF-8643 STRAIGHT TO UPRIGHT"

Hi,

This cable is used for configuration cabling to adapter PERC, which refers to Figure 2. Cable routing – 8 x 2.5 inch drive backplane with adapter PERC. (https://dell.to/3vCTCaz) It is not for your intention of usage.

thank you, do you know if the 9G3T5 can be used instead of the JHVNC? i have 2.5" drive bay backplane and the JHVNC is too short.

Hello, I'm sorry I looked up but we do not have information on cable length.

hello, i have installed the correct cable. the r740 recognizes the backplane and the s150 however the "s150 config utility" does not recognize any disk virtual or physical. oddly the NVMe also does not show up and scan 2.5" disk function will cause activity leds to light on the 2.5" drives themselves but never recognize. i have reset all to default hoping there was a leftover config from the hba330. do i need to remove the PERC retention carriage that then hba330 was connected to?
