PCIe 4 NVMe compatibility in R730xd

We have an R730xd with a P31H2 NVMe extender. We tried replacing 2 of the drives with PCIe 4 NVMe SSDs (Samsung PM1733), since PCIe 4 is backward compatible with PCIe 3.

Unfortunately they don’t show up. Can this be fixed?

Also: this R730xd iDRAC and BIOS also doesn’t show 4 other M2 drives (on a PCIe extender). However, they do show in the OS, and the exact same hardware shows in the BIOS+OS of another R730. All have up to date BIOS.

Is the new NVMe drives are from Dell? Can you share the part number of the same? Can you also update iDRAC FW also to latest and check? In BIOS Can you check "Embedded SATA" setting and see whether it is in AHCI or RAID mode? Also can you share option you are seeing in F2 -> Device Settings page?

Hi,

- iDRAC FW (including 13G BP) is up to date

- I tried changing embedded SATA setting between off / AHCI; no luck.

- All NVMe bays 20-24 work properly

- not sure of PM1733 origin, will check. Part # is MZWLJ1T9HBJR-00007. The green power light does not turn on for them.

In addition to the 2 PM1733s, there should be 5 other block devices showing up there.

I took the two PCIe cards and placed them in the R730. Under "Integrated Devices" they show up correctly in slots 3 and 4:

This is puzzling since they show in the R730xd's OS, and both machines are flashed with the same 2.14 BIOS.

That’s okay - we will use other drives instead. Any idea on the BIOS issue?

Hi, this doesn't look like a Dell part. MZWLJ1T9HBJR-00007
And it seems also fairly new. and 13G servers are a bit dated so I am not sure if these two would work.

Hi, this is already EOS. There won't be no further development on this, I'm afraid.

Young E, forgive me; the latest 13G BIOS update was released about two weeks ago.

I’m just wondering if anyone previously encountered this issue - where an R730 would detect devices, but an R730xd would not. If not, no worries.

when adding P31H2 NVMe extender on a R730 does it offer you a hardware raid options on the drives.

When NVMe extender is connected NVME drives will be exposed to Software RAID controller. You can not get Hardware RAID functionality with NVMe extender card

Just found this thread while searching for information on my similar problem..

Dell PowerEdge R630 with NVME Expander Card (Dell Part-No. 0GY1TD) and its not detecting the NVME SSDs i put in the last 4 Bays that should work with nvme.

The NVME SSDs are genuine Dell with Part-No. 0WR2FG.

I couldn´t find any compatibility matrix for what Dell NVME drives work with PowerEdge R630.

They get detected by the Backplane it seems, because the LEDs light up.. but they won´t be detected in BIOS/iDRAC or the OS (lspci should show them i think).

Im also wondering, is it normal that in iDRAC there is no information on the PCI-E extender?

Its my first server with that card, so i don´t know if i should be expecting more information here:

Hello,

i checked the part number and this hard drive WR2FG is not compatible with R630.

Maybe this is the cause of the issue.

And for the idrac information, that is normal that there are no details for PCI-E extender.

Thanks

Hi Marco,

many thanks for checking, then i assume this is the issue.

Can you provide a list with Dell part numbers of compatible nvme drives so i can get the right ones?

No I don't have this kind of document, but you can contact our presales team or a reseller to check with them which part is compatible.

Thanks

Thanks Macro,

i tried to get information from our contacts at Dell (my company is a Dell Partner) but they only said that it isn´t possible to install NVME-drives in the front bays, and that i can only use PCI-E AICs. Which is definitly wrong because the 10 Bay Models are designed to have NVME drives in the last 4 Bays....

Im thinking about getting the Dell Y27TR as they are cheap on used market and i found a forum post where they are listed as compatible with the PowerEdge R630. But it would be nice to get confirmation from Dell on that...
