Improving Performance with a PERC H310
Can I get some advise on improving performance on a Dell T420 with a PERC H310? I have 2x15K SAS drives in RAID1 with a dedicated hot spare. Unfortunately, the bottleneck is the PERC H310 as I have come to realize. Short of upgrading the raid controller, what are my options to improve performance?
I'm running SQL Server 2012 and the write speeds are simply dismal.
Thank you!

Fahdk,
The first thing I would do is ensure that the controller, BIOS, and the iDrac are current and up to date. After that you can check to see what the controller cache is set to. I believe with the H310 it is going to be Write Through. See if it allows you to set it to Write Back.
Lastly you could upgrade to one of the upper Perc controllers like the H710, that would allow you to use cachecade. Cachecade will improve application performance by increasing read caching capacity which makes use of high- performing SSDs as a secondary tier of cache.
You can find the updates needed here - http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/poweredge-t420/drivers
Let me know if this helps.

Thanks Chris,
It is planned to run SUU and bring all firmware and drivers up to date on our next scheduled maintenance. I will look into the cache options as suggested.
I know we will eventually have to upgrade to the H710. Am hoping to get by with the H310 for sometime yet. I was told by sales (Dell India) that they don't have the H710 in stock at the moment anyway. Haven't yet received pricing information from them either. I have a feeling it is going to be very cost prohibitive here in India.
Thanks again for your advise! :)

I would suggest you get the H710 from someone other than Dell. You can get it from suppliers for MUCH less than buying direct from Dell.

Thanks for that. I'll check with a few other suppliers. :)
