how to increase storage from another partition

hi, we have a dell power edge server running windows server 2012. The C partition is running out of space. The D partition has plenty. Is it possible to transfer some of this storage to the C partition? Is there a Dell management software that can do this?
if this is not possible will a new raid drive add/increase the C drive storage?

Need help urgently. Thanks.

Hello dell_J,

Could you please check troubleshooting steps from this article:

Please create a validated backup of your data before starting any action.

Thank you.

Hi ,

this method will not work. In order to extend the C storage, you need to shrink the D partition first. If you do this than the unallocated space will be sitting after the D partition not after the C partition.

In order for the above solution to work the unallocated space should come immediately after the volume you want to extend.

You can try below option. I am not sure whether this will work but you can try it out

Take a backup of partition D then delete partition D. This will allow you to extend partition C. Once C drive is extended then you ca recreate disk drive D and copy the data from backup.

Hi , yeah I found out about this method earlier and wanted to try it out but I was told if I backup/copy all files from the D partition and later restore/paste it, some applications may not work.. so I'm not really sure about this method..

Hi I know you answered in response to Shine's post but the method that shine gave is the most simple, easier and doesn't cost much. Applications can always be deleted and reinstalled. Just make sure back up and restore data files, I would say at this point.

Hello,

If you want to increase the storage in your system, adding 1 or 2 hard drives would only be the first step. You would also need to either expand an existing virtual disk or create a new one. Once that is complete, you would need to either expand the filesystem to use the new space, or format if it is a new virtual disk and assign it an identifier.

However, there is not enough information in your post to provide you any further detail in how to do this. I would have to recommend looking at the manuals for your server and controller to determine the specific steps.

Hi,

please check and explain how your disks are physically connected, your virtual disks management, and search if the RAIDs are working fine or if a failure is detected for example RAID degraded.

What power edge and which controller did you use?

Did you have any further questions?

hi its Power Edge T430. In idrac the storage shows as physical disks 3, virtual disk 1. the Raid controller is PERC H330 Adapter (PCI Slot 3). Each Physical disk is 1862.50GB. The virtual disk 'Online RAID-5 3725.00 GB'

Dell_J,

The partition delete option normally will be greyed out if there is a Page File, system files, or the OS present on the partition. Would you confirm if any of these are indeed the case?

Also, the article here discusses the Online Capacity Expansion process for the H330.
