Converting from Raid 1 to Raid 5.
Hi,
I've posted before and finally I think I will have the time to complete this task.
I want to convert my current Raid 1 Setup to a Raid 5.
I should be able to just reconfigure my current Virtual disk by adding the new drives to it. Right-clicking and selecting reconfig... then select all 4 drives for the array disk... change the raid type and then update the size to the max size posted...(138GB) 4 36GB drives. Leave everything the same and select ok. I just want to make sure....will I loose any data when I convert? Is there anything I am missing? Yes I will backup b4 I do this.

Hi,
You have the procedure correct. I always recommend the system and Perc driver / firmwares are at the latest revision. Usually this procedure goes smoothly with no problems.
Dell Server System BIOS, PowerEdge 4400, A09
Filename: B2200T09.exe (455 KB)

Dell ESM Firmware, PowerEdge 2550, 4400, A56
Filename: a56cust.exe (405 KB)

Note: Extract the files to a DOS bootable floppy disk. Boot the server to this floppy disk, and run smflsh.exe
(Assuming Win2000 here - Always update the Perc driver before the Perc firmware)
PERC2, 2/Si, 3/Si, 3/Di, Driver, 2000, v. 2.7.1.4944, A12
Filename: w2ka12dr.exe [211 KB] <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>Adaptec PERC3/Di, Firmware, PowerEdge 4400, v. 2.7.1.3571, A10

Thank you for the reply Mark.
I wasn't sure if I should include the "c" drive (Drive 0) or if I would lose any data in the reconfig....I guess not including disk0 would still give me Raid5 because of the 3 drives..but it would not give me the amount of space that I am looking for.

Hi,
Sorry I missed that part of your question. In general all of our Raid management utilities will not let you or will warn you if you are attempting any operation which will destroy data.
Of course ANY operation on a computer carries the possibility of data loss. These failures are very rare, but always something to be prepared for.
Thanks for all you input and feedback on the Dell Community Forums. I am glad to hear your system upgrade was successful.
