r720XD mixing 2RX4 with 2RX8?
It looks like Dell doesn't sell 2RX4 8GB RAM modules any more. They recommend 2RX8 and 1Rx4 for the R720XD.
Can I mix and match my old 2RX4 with the new 2RX8? I believe the manual says no, but it seemed like an off-hand recommendation, and not a big bold warning.
I have 12 modules installed.

What they are referencing to is that only one type of DIMM is allowed per system: UDIMM, RDIMM, or LRDIMMs. They cannot be mixed. The R720XD does support mixing dimms, as clarified on the bottom of page 42, as well as the top of 43, here.

J.cdoran,
A couple things. First is that I am not seeing a limitation listed regarding mixing 2rx4 and 2rx8's. Second thing is that I am showing that we do still offer the 8gb 2rx8 (part number PKCG9 or 25RV3).
Have you tried populating the dimms and are seeing an error? If so, whats the error you are getting?
Let me know.

Thanks for replying "DELL-CHRIS H". I was having problems connecting to the forum yesterday.
I think our wires got crossed. I have 12 modules of part number RVY55 installed (2RX4). Dell only sells 2RX8 and 1Rx4 now.
Perhaps I am reading this wrong, but the manual (https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/poweredge_12th_generation_server_memory.pdf) says:
"Note also that mixed DIMM types within the same system is not supported. The entire system must be populated with the exact same type of DIMM."
... and it has a table that separates the DIMM types into ranks and bits, indicating that they are different.
I would prefer to know if I can mix the different bit-width modules, before purchasing them (the 2RX8's in this case).
I think I have found a third party supplier that has stock of the old RVY55 part, so my question may now be moot. But I would still like to know for future reference, as I would prefer to source my parts direct from Dell.
Thanks for responding.
