R720 gpu for video encoding tasks

Hello,

I have Dell R720 server and I would like to know if it's possible to install one of following nVidia GPUs inside:

  • PNY Quadro K5000 (dual slot, normal profile)
  • PNY Quadro K4200 (single slot, normal profile)
  • PNY Quadro T400 (single slot,  low Profile)

Server is dual CPU server with dual 750W PSUs

Thank you in advance for you kind reply.

Hello atafm2,

thank you for your reply. I do not need VMs, this machine will just do video encoding with ffmpeg on ubuntu. Since I know all GPUs should be the same or no? Officially Dell states that is supports only K2000 if I'm not wrong. So for example from your opinion I can use 2x Quadro T400 low profile, single slot, on this server in the left most low profile pci-e slots?

Thank you very much!

I dont think youre supposed to share service tag

Officially, the server doesnt support pretty much anything.

It will more than likely work though.

If you have all the risers, you could install all 3

Do note, leave the integrated video controller enabled if you want to use GPU passthrough into your VM. If the video card is in use for display, you cannot do passthorugh.

If you want to use the GPU for video out, disable the integrated video controller in the bios.

Here is one of my R730xd which is basically the same thing as the 720 just newer.

This one has dual E5-2697v4 and a GTX 680 and a quadro P600 all on the 750W PSUs

You can even get the power cable if your GPU needs additional power.

Disclaimer on this: I use this particular server for home-lab use. If you are running mission critical stuff, be more cautious.

Per this post:

Hello JW

I need to know if the PCIe slots on the Dell R720 (12 gen) are 75W capable

Yes, slots 1-3 are 25W and slots 4-7 are 75W.

Thanks

The T400 has a max power draw of 30W

https://www.pny.com/nvidia-t400

So ideally you would want to plug it into slots 4-7

If this is for a home-lab low criticality thing you might be able to get away with putting it in the 25W slots as long as you keep utilization down. And power draw specs are always conservative. But if you can, be safe and put it in the 75W slots
