Precision 7820 Tower failing to boot/crashing

Hello everyone,

I’m having an issue with my 7820 workstation, which I purchased this summer. It’s been running ESXi 8 without any problems until a few weeks ago.

Here’s the situation:

  • The system posts sporadically. More often than not, I just get a black screen.
  • The video card is in slot 2 using vga
  • "When" I can boot into either Windows or ESXi, and it runs fine overnight with no issues.
  • The odd part: When I try to start a virtual machine, the system crashes.
  • After crashing, it usually won’t POST. There are no error LED indications, just a white light on the power button.
  • It also powers on by itself the moment I plug it in.
  • AC recovery/Restore after AC Power Loss is set to "Power Off"

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Reseated all the RAM (note: the RAM modules are from different manufacturers).
  • Ran ePSA diagnostics, but it locked up, seemingly on the memory test.
  • Updated the BIOS when I was able to boot into Windows.
  • Removed the Dell Ultra-speed Quad M.2 NVMe PCIe adapter card
  • Replaced video card with MSI NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 2GD3 LP Single Fan 2GB DDR3 PCIe 2.0 Graphics Card

This workstation was a personal investment for work, so I’m really hoping to resolve the issue. If anyone has ideas on what to try next, I’d be extremely grateful for your help.

Thank you
