Dell PowerEdge 1950 ESM/BMC Update

Just another quick question.

How do I safely update the ESM/BMC firmware on my PowerEdge 1950. I tried it before using the windows executable and it ended up killing the RAID card as it wouldn't detect any SATA drives, only SAS Drives.

Is there something im missing?

The 1950 is a Gen 3 and running Windows Server 2012 R2.

The main reason for updating the firmware is that it is over 5 versions out of date and the front LED display on the 1950 is extremely dark.

Thanks.

First, matching BIOS and ESM should always be installed, and before updating the ESM you should update the BIOS. System firmware should really be updated before hardware or OS upgrades as newer drivers typically have minimum supported firmware versions.

The RAID card likely was a result of mismatched firmware. There could be other reasons that SATA drives were not detected too without it being the RAID card ... we could work through that if you want.

Updating the ESM is unlikely to change the LCD brightness. Many dim randomly as the normal course of the lifetime of the server and the only way to fix is to replace the LCD itself.
