Adding Memory to PE T710
Hello everyone,
I have two T710s in our lab right now running the following configuration for a total of 24GB:
Slot A1 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A4 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A7 - [Empty]
Slot A2 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A5 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A8 - [Empty]
Slot A3 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A6 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A9 - [Empty]
We just bought a 12GB kit with 3-4GB DDR3-1333 1.35v DR x 8 VLP RDIMM 240p Kit that was suggested via Crucial. We then added them to the open slots, A7, A8 and A9 according the the diagram shown on the inside panel of the server: Memory Opimized or Sparing1, Sequence: (1,2,3) (4,5,6) (7,8,9). We are getting the following errors during :
MEMBIST failure - The following DIMM has been disabled by BIOS: DIMM A3
MEMBIST failure - The following DIMM has been disabled by BIOS: DIMM A6
MEMBIST failure - The following DIMM has been disabled by BIOS: DIMM A9
We had also got another error though I cannot find out how I got to it but it was:
Message PR11: Part Replacement license is not present, replacement action(s) will not be performed
Anyone have any ideas?

Hello spacecat84
Everything looks good according to the specs. I would suggest testing the 3 new DIMMs by themselves in slots 1-3. Also, check the specifications on the memory to make sure it can down-clock to 800 MHz. With all channels populated the DIMMs will work at 800Mhz.
If the 3 DIMMs work by themselves then test with 3 of the other DIMMs. With 2 channels populated the memory will operate at 1066MHz. If the memory works in both of those configurations then it is having an issue down-clocking to 800Mhz.
Thanks

Hey Daniel,
I tested the 3 new DIMMs as you described, they worked fine @ 1333MHz. I then added another triple of the old DIMMs and got up to 24GB (I did not notice if it down-clocked it). Finally I added the last triple to total 36GB @ 800MHz.
Am I really sacrificing much performance at 800MHz? I added the memory to boost my VMs from 3GBs of vRAM to 4GB. Do you think I will notice all that much?
Thanks,
Joe

To clarify, my setup is now work in the following configuration:
Slot A1 - Crucial 4GB DDR3-1333 1.35v DR x 8 VLP RDIMM 240p
Slot A4 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A7 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A2 - Crucial 4GB DDR3-1333 1.35v DR x 8 VLP RDIMM 240p
Slot A5 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A8 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A3 - Crucial 4GB DDR3-1333 1.35v DR x 8 VLP RDIMM 240p
Slot A6 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
Slot A9 - 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600R 1333-ECC
36GB @ 800MHz
Apparently I just needed to rearrange it.

I doubt you will notice much of a difference. The only time you will really notice the memory speed is when initially loading something into memory. If you are using memory intensive applications then the speed difference could be quite noticeable. In a VM environment you will probably get more benefit from higher capacity than higher speed.
Thanks
