Maxed CPU freq and fans

Hello all,

We are running a PowerEdge T340 Windows Server 2019 with the following:

Intel(R) Xeon(R) E-2224 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 32Gb Ram

We've noticed that the fans have been getting louder as summer has been progressing to the point where they seem to be running at full whack all the time. I've checked the resource monitor on the server and the CPU usage is only ever between 1-5% depending on the level of requests. However, the maximum frequency (blue line) is constantly at 122%. What is causing this? The fans are not restricted and there is good airflow.

One potential problem that some research has led me to is that we are using an APC uninterruptible power supply in the event of power cuts. Will this change the power management settings and cause the CPU and fans to go crazy?

Thanks in advance.

Bamboo_baja,

Would you confirm what revision your BIOS and iDrac are at?

If you are on the iDrac 6.00.00 version then that is likely the issue. As seen on the posting here the 6.00.00 revision is causing the fan increase and Dell is working at getting a replacement firmware released. If you are at 6.00.00 then I would recommend backflashing to the previous version, until the replacement firmware is repleased.

Let me know what you see.
