Upgrades to the Optiplex 5040

I've been looking into upgrading my Optiplex 5040 (Not quite sure of the size but it's the one that folds out when you take off the side) and I've been wondering what upgrades I could put in it. I was thinking about this:

More RAM - 16GB is already quite a bit but I want to kinda future proof myself

Higher Storage - Already have the parts ordered to put an SSD in, I just want to know if there's enough space and enough sata ports on the mobo to keep the original hard drive for games as well as keep the optical drive.

Better CPU - The i5-6500 is REALLY old and I wanted to at least put an i7 in it and possibly get a higher generation

Dedicated GPU - I've been looking at an RTX 3050 as it's nice and cheap but still part of the newest 30 series

Bigger PSU - I'd only do this if I didn't have enough wattage for to support the rest of it.

Can anyone tell me if these upgrades are even possible and/or where to find the parts for them? Thanks!

Check it out:  https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/optiplex-5040-desktop/opti5040mtom/specifications?guid=guid-442798b9-2c5a-4dcb-87c3-8dc387625675&lang=en-us

It sounds like you have the MT, but need to know for sure:

MT's aren't as big as they used to be and don't fit full size PSU's.  Not purdee, but a full size PSU would have to sit outside the case.

You can put an i7-6700 in it, that's the max. This PC does not support higher generation CPUs.

M.2 2280 SSD is fast and has a slot on the motherboard.

Another SATA SSD can be put in if You already have a HDD and You can still keep the ODD.

You need DDR3L RAM, the "L" is important. You could have 4x8GB in it.

  • RTX 3050 4GB = 90w
  • RTX 3050 8GB = 130w

Would definitely need a PSU upgrade.  Not sure if 9.5 inch card card would fit.  If not, another option is PCIe extension cable to have GPU outside of the case.

Here's the dimensions which are the same for the 4GB and 8GB models:

Optiplex's are business class machines.  So some of the somewhat newer and smaller MT models aren't that great for upgrading to beefy gaming machines.

Some of the newest models, however, like the 7080 & 7090 have optional PSU's that can handle gaming better.
