OptiPlex 9020, compatible GPU?

Good day,

My sister asked me about graphics card update options for her OptiPlex 9020, and I saw this GT-710 that would fit her needs of playing flash player games. My question is, would I need to provide a new psu? or it will be fine just plug and play?

Edit: I read that graphics card under 75w will be fine, so in that case would a GT-1030 be compatible as well?

Graphics cards over 40W are not fine.

Stock power supply is 290W for the tower and LESS for Desktop and SFF.

Mini tower can use 75W cards if it has the optional 365w power supply.

MSI GT1030 works fine and in all models EXCEPT USFF which has no slots.

You might want to check for any potential bottleneck.  For example, a Google search term, "I5-4590 gt 1030 bottleneck."  Then select the option that's PC Builds.  A result might look like:

Graphic card is too weak for this processor:

Intel Core i5-4590 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce 100% of bottleneck. Everything over 10% is considered as bottleneck.

The GT 710 would definitely be too weak.

Before I go any further, what CPU do you have?  What size is your 9020, MT, SFF, USFF, or Micro?

Hello @bradthetechnut , I have a similar question and wonder if you could advise me?

I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 9020 USFF with i5 2.9GHz, 8GB RAM, SSD, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and Intel HD Graphics 4600.

I was hoping to upgrade the graphics card, I'd like to be able to play RTS games like Total War. Would this be possible?

Thanks in advance!

The USFF has no slot to add GPU's.  MT's are the best for expanding.

I have a 9020 tower that I got early this past summer that I'm looking to upgrade with a GPU to do some basic streaming.

I am good with upgrading RAM as necessary, and while I am open to upgrading my CPU i'd rather not have to upgrade my PSU.

I would prefer to simply install a decent ~$100 GPU. Any Ideas?

RX550 is 50W - 75W card

Minimum recommended power supply is 350W.

This is not a 5450This is not a 5450

That picture that you linked is not my card. It's this YESTON.jpg and it's a single slot 4gb of vram card great for smaller builds. I have others that I would suggest but this one sticks out to me.The nvidia QUADRO k4000 is another single slot card that has low power draw. Cheers

I wouldn't suggest the K4000 on a standard Optiplex PSU, as it's 80w.

Blue slot = 75w.

Optiplex 9020 + GTX 1050 ti + YouTube List

What mainly came up on the YouTube list is the 9020 SFF with 255w PSU.

You probably won't get a good GTX 1050 ti for $100 or under, but it's a good fit with the I5-4570.

It might be best to stay away from this one.  Yes, it might fit   However, it comes in 65w and 130-140w models.  The 130-140w model is especially a no since the 9020 SFF PSU wouldn't be able to power it.

As for the 65w model, you might find YouTube videos of it working in 9020 SFF or SFF models with the same chassis as yours.  However, I must mention this would be outside of Dell specs.  Only 35w is supported.  See screengrab below from the 9020 Tech Guide:

There's other GPU's that'll work.  50w cards are a possibility in SFF models as compared to 65w-75w cards.

  • 30w GT 1030 GDDR5
  • 30w Quadro P400  (You might also find other Quadro's in this wattage range.)
  • 40w Quadro P600
  • 50w RX 6400

You might also find in searching Dell Community, or Googling your PC and "GPU" or "graphics card" and going into Dell Community that way that GPU questions on the 9020 have been answered numerous times, but may be not for the GTX 645.  But that can also give you ideas depending on your games' system requirements or other app requirements.

Another option with the 9020 SFF is use a 315w PSU from the Optiplex XE2 SFF.  That would more than easily power the 65w GTX 645 and other 75w cards if interested.

Here is my 9020 SFF with an RX 6400 card. It could work with the stock 250W PSU, but I took the safe route and put the 315W XE2 PSU instead. Be warned though - when playing games, it can get pretty warm (about 85C)
