Optiplex 780 Tech Guide.pdf

Upgrading a 2010 Optiplex shouldn't be anything overwhelming and is remarkably easy.

Simply stating the maxes - Max CPU it can take is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3.0GHz.  It gets 64% better performance than an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz according to gamedebate.

Max RAM is 16GB (4x4) @ 1066MHz DDR3.  Crucial is recommended as it's guaranteed to work in Dell's.  In the fine print in the manual, it can take 1333MHz, but will run it at 1066MHz due to the chipset.

Listed at the time of print in the tech guide, max suggested GPU is 1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GT330.  However, we have experts, including Rockstars, that are more familiar with more expertise in GPU's than what I have.  There might be a newer one that's considered the max as long as it's 25w or under.  This is where a 780 is quite limited.

It's not stated the size of your 780 - MT, DT, SFF, or USFF.  I answered this according to MT specs.  The USFF has no expansion slots and its max RAM is 8GB.

It's also not mentioned what your PC is already configured with.  A suggested path for upgrading is SSD > RAM > GPU > CPU.  However, if your 780 has a dual processor, like an Intel Core 2 Duo, you'll be happier with a quad.

Please continue to post if you have any further questions.

An SSD also breathes new & faster life into an older machine.

Whatever recommendations and suggestions come, the rest is up to you.  Depends on your budget and the performance you're looking for.  Could be a balance between certain upgrades, money toward a newer and faster refurb, and what you paid already.

Fortnite Minimum & Recommended System Requirements

Though the min. system requirements don't specify which I3 CPU, it's likely a dual.

If you do not have a TOWER you are already at a disadvantage.  Power Supplies must be adapted.

Bare minimum I recommend 2 of these ram sticks

Fortnite works best with QUAD core systems and at least 8 gigs of ram.

GT1030 video card would be minimum recommended.

Radeon R series cards DO NOT and WILL NOT EVER work in this model so don't go there.  Radeon 7750 card would work but would be slower than a GT1030.Cards must be SHORT and ONE SLOT WIDE ONLY.

The 780 when it has an ACTUAL GPU which INTEL HD4000 isnt works fine with Fortnite.

Thats why the GT1030 is also fine.

Quad Core CPUS definitely work better than Core 2 duo.

  • CPU: Core i3 2.4 Ghz ( oops you have the wrong PC to meet this)
  • CPU SPEED: Info
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 64-bit
  • VIDEO CARD: Intel HD 4000
  • PIXEL SHADER: 3.0
  • VERTEX SHADER: 3.0

CORE IS NOT CORE 2.

ok?

no case stated,  sff mt or what case you have, that tells what fits in side,  step 1 is telling what PC you really have, and what is inside there now in those slots and all SATA ports, HDD count?

here is the spec. on your game, shop based in this or better on future needs,

get multiplex 3040 or newer

wiki optiple can find the CORE (not duo , or core 2.)

series 4 up.

not less ever.  Core i5 up is even a better choice as the maker clearly stated.

I think you already know "Intel Core 2 Duo" and "Intel Core 2 Quad" are names Intel gave that series of CPU's.  The Wikipedia link you gave also mentions those CPU's under the heading "Models, in relative chronological order," and scroll down to the mid-2000's.  Some Xeon's also went by the name of "Core 2 Quad."

"isn't" is a typo?  Without "isn't," then the pgh. makes better sense.

INTEL HD4000 is not a Real GPU and steals from system ram.  Its not a typo.

So it "doesn't" work fine with Fortnite.  I know it's an integrated GPU.  I thought "isn't" was a typo because Intel HD 4000 is listed as a minimum requirement for Fortnite, though it's not on the recommended requirement list.

It does work fine with Fortnite when you have a REAL GPU.

The VERSION of GT1030 matters.

DDR4 GT1030 cards are Junk.  GDDR5 versions are fine for everything.
