optiplex 780 gaming

Hi, I'm core 2 duo, right now I am 13 years of age and am on a tight budget, and have a thing for electronics. I recently thought it would be a good idea to get into pc gaming. I won't get into it but there were a lot of reasons I thought I could use a pc. so when my friend offered me a dell Optiplex 780 mini tower with a core 2 quad q9400 for $30 U.S., I knew I needed to grab it. all I needed to do was slap a cheap graphics card in it and I was ready to dive into the adventures of low-end gaming. all in all, not a bad pc, I'm writing this very email-ish letter to you on it, but it is by no means gaming ready. until my gigabyte gt 1030 low profile GDDR5 comes in. like I say, it's not a bad machine but there are creature comforts that I would like to see on this desktop that is not directly comparable. such as USB 3.0 preferably not trough PCIe, and an SSD (is there even SATA III?).

a few more questions id like to ask,
what does USB 3.0 headers look like?
could I shove a second fan in the chassis?
where did my ravioli go?

welcome to this forum .

780 is not one PC read Chris Dells 1st sticky post and he asks you what size PC this is, MT is best. minitower.

is it?  MT, DT, SFF  or USFF ? (4 PCs sold not the same)

I have a ond 790 (a lab torture PC) if far better, uses a real PSU and is not BTX pain. 780 has issues.

here is my avoid list

The BTX avoid list is here: (PASTED)
Optiplex, XPS and Dimension numbers, 755,780,380,760,3100-e310,3100,5150,9100,9150,9200, xps 200s/210/310/400/410/420/700/720, E520, E310, at the least.

BTX , PC see things even hit the VERY VERY ODD CPU fan Cage, and very hard to cure, (I have none) I loathe BTX .

I have  380 mobo and is pure  pain. in my spares box.  I'd give it away, for sure. zero value it.

are you going to run w10? 64bit?  if yes only (nvidia world) GTX7xx up run on w10  . so there is that.

BTX HAS a BACKWARDS mOBO FITMENT, THIS IS SUPER BAD, IDEA, now gone forever.

the backwards MOBO means GPU mounts upside down , never good that,

here is 780MT and see how many GPU hit the fan?  shroud, this is NOT GOOD, but short cards may work

Intel Q45

core2 DUO may run w10-32bit.

but not the 64bit,  if not unless the  newest intel stepping  but mine with that runs 64b

w10 but the Core 2 E6300 runs great)

the quads are best,.

CPU this old are dirt cheap, even for $5 so  get what you want, go highest stepping codes (intel)

why do you fear PCI-e cards,  cost? not clear there

you bought low pro GPU , so is DT< right> Destop size but that does not let you skip fit of card as it hits the fan should, did you open the and look first. upside down GPU card?

see the DT, if DT it is 10x worse. horrible worse... up side down GPU is not good there, see?\

backwards BTX mobo again, never good that.

dell sold 5 cards for it back in 2009, that may  not run w10 at all, for sure not 3D mode.

ONly  super thin cards work here 1/2 wide I call them or less, for sure not fanless, but thin fan heatsinks. only.

last from the offical list new tech guide is this

1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT330 with DVI or VGA and S-Video Out (adapters convert to dual DVI or dual VGA)
Optional card (yes)
512MB ATI RADEON HD 4550 Graphics with dual DVI or VGA and S-Video Out (adapters convert to dual DVI or dual VGA)(no w10 support
Optional card
256MB ATI RADEON HD 3450 Graphics with dual DVI or VGA and S-Video Out (adapters convert to dual DVI or dual VGA)
Optional card(no w10 support
256MB ATI RADEON HD 3470 Graphics with Dual DP (adapters convert to dual DVI or dual VGA)
Optional card(no w10 support
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300 GE with dual DVI or VGA and S- (NO FAN and thin,) a $5 slug

fast cards have thick fins. and fans too. no fans and fast and HS is HUGE.

9300 yes

most of these have no w10 support for sure 3d mode, only limphome mode. 2D weak.

HD5000 up yes,  below NO. per the AMD.com web page statements clear there.

GTX7xx up and only thin cards.

let me pretend I did not thrash this PC, (I would)

and buy old AMD card thing, no budget stated by you only the cheap word (my guess $20  = cheap) IDK.

here they are, 5000 series the most old that w10 supports (and up too, 6000 for example)

there are no fast cheap cards, but here is my choice, (low ball) avoiding the split cable cards.

1: HD 8490,  $20? with DVI and DP ports, there.

no saying it fits but only buying one and trying it can work,  these HD cards are some of the thinnest (wide) made. good luck finding card that fits cheap, (a tall order that)

finding thin (depth) fast low profile card, is not easy.  if you stated a dollar figure,  then maybe.

@savvy2  He "told PC" in his first and only post. He clearly stated it is an

Optiplex 780 MINI TOWER!

core 2 quad q9400

Here, I made it BIGGER so you can read it now, even with no spectacles. Now PC is "told".

But, you forgot to tell him about

SPECTRE AND

MELTDOWN!

I reckon @speedstep  will take care of that omission VERY soon.
