Optiplex 3040 and 3070 PSU question

I've got an Optiplex 3040SFF and an Optiplex 3070MT. Both computers have bad motherboards, but the PSU units are working fine in both of them.

I thought about keeping those PSU units as spare ones.

Which Optiplexes are these PSU units compatible in case the PSU in one of my other Optiplexes fails?

I have several 3060SFF, 3070SFF, 7070MT and 3080MT Optiplexes in use.

@tibi500cid

"3060SFF, 3070SFF, 7070MT and 3080MT"

@DELL-Chris M

would have that information

HOWEVER I can tell you that there is NOT one unit that fits all models.

7040 7050 is not compatible with 7070 and neither is compatable with 7080

Re: I assume I can use the 3070MT PSU in my 3060 and 3070 SFF units. Is that true? 3060 is not compatible with 3070 3080 3090 which is why PSU DPN for these models is not the same across the board.

@redxps630

"yes. In optiplex series 5/6 including 3050-3070 and 3080-3090, MT and SFF psu have same TFX form factor and connectors."

This is a false statement 3050 is not compatible with 3070.

None of the 3040 3050 3060 3070 3080 3090 7040 7050 7060 7080 7090 are SFX or TFX. dell psu mounting is not tfx or sfx or any other standard.

They do not use standard ATX or TFX or SFX connections.  They ARE NOT compatible with each other and there is no 24 pin to 6 pin adapter for G5 8940 7080 from any vendor. I have tested this as well as Gamers Nexus and we both conclude its not standard and totally proprietary.

I don't have a 7040 or 7050 anymore and never had a 7080 (yet).

Why are You writing in so large characters?

I assume I can use the 3070MT PSU in my 3060 and 3070 SFF units. Is that true?

I believe this is false. PSU is not the same in those models either.

@DELL-Chris M  would have more information.

Large text is easier to read when you get to a certain AGE and I dont like wearing glasses.

This is the case as you age that its harder to read and get up and move.

I will eventually need JAWS screen reader.

Re: I've got an Optiplex 3040SFF and an Optiplex 3070MT

I have several 3060SFF, 3070SFF, 7070MT and 3080MT Optiplexes in use.

The 3040 psu can only be used in 3040/7040 because it uses 8 pin for mobo.

3070 psu is compatible with 3050, 3060, 7070 because they all use 6 pin of same pinout for mobo.  all mobo have one 4 pin cpu.

3070 psu is possibly compatible with 3080 too.  Here is the catch: 3080 psu uses same 6 pin for mobo but two 4 pin for cpu.  The design is to allow for across the board support of high power 10th gen cpu (i7/i9 8/10 core) validated for high end 7080 in the same series. If you update to such a high power cpu, a single 4 pin cpu is not enough.  However, most likely your 3080 has a low power stock cpu (i3/i5 4-6 core) because it is a Dell entry level model, it will probably work to plug power into only one of the two 4 pin cpu connectors on mobo.

https://www.delltechnologies.com/asset/en-us/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/technical-support/optiplex-3080-spec-sheet.pdf

3080 cpu: i3/i5

7080 cpu: i3/5/7/9.

yes. In optiplex series 5/6 including 3050-3070 and 3080-3090, MT and SFF psu have same TFX form factor and connectors.  The psu of MT and SFF of same series are 100% interchangeable.

Dell spec limits max psu power for SFF and reserves higher power psu for MT, but there is nothing stopping user from using MT psu in SFF.

OK, then which Optiplexes are compatible with my 3070MT PSU?

And I've got a brand new 3070SFF PSU too.

Which Optiplexes is that compatible with?
