Dell Optiplex 5080 unable to boot from CD/DVD
Hi all,
The recently purchased Optiplex 5080 does not boot from the CD Drive. The CD Drive appears everywhere except of the Boot Sequence setting. Following the new guide https://www.dell.com/support/article/de-de/sln142679/how-to-enable-boot-from-dvd-option-with-uefi-boot-mode-enabled-windows-10-8-1-8?lang=en doesn't help because in the File System List the value "CD" does not appear. The version of this BIOS is not covered on the guide.
Can someone please advise? Thank you.

The reason its not booting has to do with the region code setting.
You can install puppy linux and run regioncode to set the drive to your region
There are eight region codes possible, currently six are used:
North America (USA and Canada)
Europe, Middle East, South Africa and Japan
Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Korea
Latin America, Australia, New Zealand
Former Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine, etc.), rest of Africa, India
China
DVDs contain most often a region code flag indicating the geographical region where the DVD was published (enabling the film and software industry to control the distribution).
WOOF Puppy still runs clean and mean live from a CDR
It will boot fine every day from a CD but WILL NOT BOOT from a DVD that is region coded.
Puppy linux CD likely works fine
burn a copy on cdr and F12 boot from that.
Once your region is set if the dvd is legit and for your country it will boot windows dvd. dont forget to press enter when you see the press any key to boot from CD.

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) based computers have been around for a long time. Most people familiar with computers have been into the BIOS setup at some point to change a setting such as boot device order or the system time.
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is a standard and is (however much a pain it is) necessary to help address the limitation of BIOS/MBR systems limit of support for hard disks above 2 TB. MBR can not work on large disks. It is fairly inexpensive these days to replace your current harddisk with a 4 TB or even 6 TB.
You must turn secure boot off for an os that doesnt have security certificate from microsoft to F12 boot. Dells in general will not show the F12 boot menu when secure boot is on so you F2 into bios setup and turn it off.
Simply type the following command to install regionset:
$ sudo apt-get install regionset
then run by Typing the command as follows:
# regionset /dev/dvd

My solution does apply you have to set region on DVD before it will boot. Region coding is set from windows or linux. CD booting doesnt have region code or encryption.
Any os other than Windows 10 64 bit or Ubuntu 18.04 etc will require secure boot OFF in bios for F12 booting.
Only 64 bit os is supported and it must be GPT UEFI not MBR Legacy. This is why I recommend making Puppy Linux CD.
1. Press Windows Key + R Key.
2. Type “devmgmt.msc” without the quotes and hit on Enter Key.
3. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right-click the DVD drive for which you want to change region settings and then click Properties.
4. On the DVD Region tab.
5. Under list of regions, scroll down the mouse to search for your region from the list and click on it.
6. Then region you want will be listed below, then click on Ok button.

5080 works with ubuntu.
https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201912-27651
There is support for it but support is not free.
Dell does not support Linux unless the system came with it from dell.

Hi all,
I got the CD finally identified by using openSUSE and the instructions there https://software.opensuse.org/distributions/leap?locale=en
What actually helped and made the difference is the tool ImgBurn http://www.imgburn.com/
Thank you for your replies.

Are you certain it's a CD drive the 5080 has? I haven't heard of PC's coming with CD drives in a long time.

Indeed, I was also surprised to see that it is available.

Shoot, one of our other experts will have to answer. If something doesn't show in BIOS, I don't always have the answer. But if it shows in BIOS and not Windows, then I have the answer.
I wonder if your BIOS sees the CD drive as DVD drive. I take it rhat it won't take a DVD? So many things are on DVD now days, like software for one, a PC coming with CD drive leaves me a bit baffled.
I don't know what size your 5080 is, but may be look into getting a DVD drive for it? I wouldn't be surprised if that's what you expected it to come with.

The upload turned out blurry. That's been happening sometimes.
You said the CD Drive appears everywhere except Boot Sequence. Does it appear under Drives > Then either SATA-0, SATA-1, etc.? Not knowing the size of your 5080, I don't know how many SATA ports it has. But I wonder if plugging it into a different SATA port would help.

I have this same issue with an Optiplex 5080. Were you able to resolve it?

Hi @Hercul_5s,
What CD were you trying to boot from?

This simple idea will sound a little zany, but here's what it works for. If a drive doesn't show in Windows, but shows in BIOS, I suggest unchecking it in BIOS, click Apply, then recheck it, and click Apply. For that scenario, it's worked for me twice and has worked for others.
I've dealt with non-Dell PC's before not reading certain CD/DVD drives before, or, not completely reading it. I had to change drives. I wonder if Dell mistakenly put partially incompatible CD/DVD drives in your PC's.
