Can I install a intel Core i7 4790k in my dell optiplex 3020 sff??
Hey there I recently got a hold of a dell optiplex 3020 sff and I was contemplating if I should install a intel core i5 4590 or an intel Core i7 4790k
Im not sure which of these two to choose from so I need your help in deciding

4790k is a premium cpu with base freq at 4.0 ghz. I would pick that with understanding that Dell optiplex bios does not allow user to overclock it and the sff cpu cooler is too small for cooling a cpu during overclocking anyway.
you would probably need to upgrade 3020 cpu heatsink to 9020 performance grade heatsink for better cooling of 4790k
i5 4590 hits a sweet spot between performance and cost so if i5 significantly less expensive than i7-4790k then worth considering too

I am able to cool 4790 in my 9020 sff using Dell performance heatsink (thicker than the thin mainstream cpu in 3020). TDP of 4790 is 84 w close to 88 w of 4790k

check your 3020 sff heatsink. if it looks like a thin pancake, then it is mainstream for 65 w cpu not good for 4790k
if you go for 4790k choose the performance heatsink upgrade
