best gpu for desktop optiplex 790
i have a cheap gaming rig for my little brother, running a 400 watt psu with an amd hd-7770 1gb card( i can get a bigger psu if needed but i dont think it will be necessary) id like to know what is the best card for this rig thats slightly overkill, so that the cpu is the bottle neck instead. i have the i5-2400 and plan to upgrade ram soon.
and also is the i7-2600 an upgrade worth the price of these cpus?

790 MT will not give 1080P 60FPS for everything. But even a 780 when paired with GT1030 works well.
You cannot fit GT1060 into Desktop or SFF however TOWER is required as is power supply upgrade.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLVrAW2Umk8
CPU and PCI-E bus and Ram are all too slow for full HD.
Power supply in MT is 290W so you should upgrade that to EVGA 700BR minimum.

Radeon R series cards do not work because this system is not UEFI class 2.3.1 bios.
All of the Pascal series up to 1080TI work but may not physically fit into the case.
So only Short Versions of the cards work.
GTX 2080 cards are not working for the same reason Radeon R series cards don't work. They Require UEFI ACPI 2.0 windows 10 class 2.3.1 bios.
Best card imho for this is GTX 1060 6 gig card. This is a short card and it will work. I have a 790MT with this card and its fine. I also use evga 700BR power supply.

Only unit that works is low profile GT1030 card.

answer #2 for MT case it is MT right?
best card
there is no best card, no job stated, in this case its 1 job a game,
what does BEST mean, define it,(complex to the extreme that simple word)
no games stated at all not even one.
$60 AAA games? and what is your FPS demand,?
have 790mT it seems.
eg:
"what card works best for AAA game", METRO? or please say your slowest running game that makes you unhappy.
if not sure, try the GTX1050ti it sips power and runs FAST , one of the best cards on the market now.
30 to 80FPs fast, if that makes you happy, sure CPU bottlenecks but gee no game stated. at all.
it use new shrunk GPU die that wastes far less power than any earlier cards, (I have 2 here, and 650, 750 and R9-380 in my T3610 that also runs in the 790) and 50 more cards, in my lab. (mostly old)"I collect them"
you need to say if FPS is the only issue first, as FPS fast is expensive, endlessly in fact.

I apologize on my ignorance, I assumed desktop was the bigger one, I assumed wrong it's the mt...as far as what fps I'm wanting, I'd like to see atleast 60fps 1080p aaa's. Correct me if I'm wrong, but If it fit i could throw a gtx 2080ti but it would be pointless since the CPU wouldnt be able to support it. I have a few gtx 1060's on my area and a few 1050's. I dont want to spend an extra 50 bucks if the CPU wouldnt be able to utilize it anyways.

Its an MT, say it, the MT it is, (cases matter, chassis matter and for sure unmodified cases matter)
we can't see your case, photos are not hard to post here 2 clicks only.
this PC will run any card up to 75watts, GTX1050 ti will run, and fit.
I have boxes full of GPU cards guess what, they all run in this PC, every one. back to 2007, even old
8400GS cards. run.
the fact is prices is your question not a specific card, I can shop all day and find deals.
first off cheap means nothing really, does it mean $20? to me cheap is below $100 see?
after all you want FAST for cheap, and not wanting to upgrade that gutless PSU, is a problem.
just got a R9-380 (200w) for $50 from guy that gave of BITTCOINN(SIC) (wise man!sells!) and had 10 or more of these great cards, but for cheap. does 300FPS (fraps) easy with COD -MW2. on all 3 of my Dells. tested.
790 with R9 rand FURMARK 97fps. on THIS PC. don't tell me it is CPU bound, I don't believe it.
but all 3 have over 700w psu upgrade, why not upgrade the PSU first so you can run vastly more cards.
vast also means MORE ON SALE USED , DIG?
so is not a CPU limit as you said, and it too can be upgraded, but most times not cheap.
put a 1050 in it, found used, for $50 if you learn how to shop that is.
btw cheap also means USED! to ME!
if buying used you can buy 10 cards at new egg, and if not trilled send them back, , only that works,
only trying works, others can not ever now what makes you happy.
but no games stated, by you not even ONE. (or id run it too on my 790 and tell you what it does , for sure)
throw a gtx 2080ti you meant RTX? and is a 215 to 250watt card (alone) and it does not THROW in.
it needs big PSU with AUX power jacks or it will NOT RUN. 700psu up. needs(imo)
why are you afraid to try, first. buy ,try, return repeat? I can not understand that.... learn to try,
if you don't have free large PSU why do you keep posting cards that need that?
here look at the TPD here. (the CPU bottlenecks may only show up in a few games of 10,000 sold) IDK no game stated YET !
wiki shows you what it needs, look?

the RTX2080 is not cheap ,; ever.
wiki again.
A USED ONE JUST SOLD FOR $874 ON EBAY, WHY SAY 2080? AT all. very confusing that, in context of cheap.
the 1050 is your card (in the cards?) used, if no PSU in on your shopping list. fact.
or used
look here, look at 6,031 speed.the best chart there is....
shop for cards that are that fast and no new huge PSU needed, only you can shop, !
learn too that old cards at fast FPS, are power hogs, and new cards are not. so cheap and fast and not 100 to 200w+ power hog are RARE, 1050s are best here, ok? new low power processer PGU chips are best. always.
the run cooler and last longer , one more quality metric to consider.
win.

I'm not here to argue and act childish like most of you seem to want to. I clearly stated I have a upgraded power supply, if I didn't I wouldnt have a pci e power cable currently plugged in to my current card. And I also said if needed I would get a bigger one. I appreciate the few of you that gave me valuable information and dont just hammer on me because I dont know to the exact detail of all specs. I never claimed to be a computer genius. I'm learning just like the rest if you, alittle kindness and understanding goes along way.

Sorry, I'd purchased a GT1030(GDDR5 variant) with a 790 MT. I was reading this thread and wondering what GPU did you get? And if I were to get a 1050ti would I need to upgrade the psu?
